‘Run 2 Rebuild Richmond’ scheduled at River Road UMC Oct. 1


River Road United Methodist Church will host its fifth Run 2 Rebuild Richmond Saturday, Oct. 1 to raise money for Rebuilding Together Richmond.

The event will include a 5K run/walk, a one-mile “Fun Run” and a wellness fair. Event proceeds will benefit Rebuilding Together Richmond, a local non-profit that brings volunteers together to repair the homes of low-income homeowners. > Read more.

Eastern Henrico crash kills Richmond man


An early morning single-vehicle crash in Eastern Henrico Sunday killed a 34-year-old Richmond man, and Henrico Police arrested the vehicle's driver and charged her with driving under the influence.

At 2:46 a.m. Sept. 25, Henrico Police and Fire personnel responded to Osborne Turnpike near the intersection of River Bend Estates Drive for a single vehicle accident.

A Chevrolet van was traveling west on Osborne Turnpike when it ran off of the right side of the roadway and into a ditch. > Read more.

Extension to offer clinics in October to address questions about plants, landscaping

The Henrico County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension will offer a series of free clinics in October to help residents diagnose problems with their plants and landscaping.

The clinics will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday at the Lowe’s home improvement store at 8001 Brook Road. Henrico Master Gardeners will be available to help identify insects and disease that may be affecting plants and to answer questions about gardening, landscaping and lawn care. > Read more.

Henrico native's nonprofit provides food, assistance to those in need

Eastern Henrico native and pastor Brian Purcell has been working for the past year to provide food, assistance, housing and jobs to the needy in the community. Now, his nonprofit organization, "The Way," is preparing to expand to a full-fledged community center in October, following its recent acquisition of a building in Sandston.

Purcell noticed that seniors and homeless veterans especially were becoming isolated due to lack of transportation and issues with aging and mental illness. Some were unable to feed themselves on a daily basis.

"I saw there was a need and wanted to do something to meet that need," Purcell said. > Read more.

Hermitage HS to host ‘School Fest’ Oct. 8


As part of an ongoing effort by Henrico County Public Schools to engage families, Hermitage High School will hold "School Fest 2016" – a celebration featuring family fun, information about the high school’s options and tips for academic readiness – Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The high school wants families at its elementary and middle school “feeder schools” – where students are zoned to attend Hermitage – to be proactive about academic preparation. For elementary students, that means knowing what it takes to advance to middle school and be successful; for middle-schoolers, it means understanding what is required to attend Hermitage and what to do now to thrive there. > Read more.

Reynolds Community College will host Richmond sculptor Paul DiPasquale Sept. 28 as he shares his presentation “Art Talk, Why Art Matters” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Conference Center Gallery of the Workforce Development and Conference Center on the Parham Road Campus, located at 1651 E. Free children’s clothing for those in need

The Children's Clothing Closet at Highland Springs United Methodist Church will be open Saturday, Aug. 27 and Tuesday, Aug. 30 to provide free new or nearly new children's clothing for families in need, prior to the start of the school year. The Clothing Closet will be open from 10 a.m. to noon both days. The church is located at 22 North Holly Avenue. > Read more.
