Henrico Schools holding job fair to recruit bus drivers

Henrico County Public Schools Human Resources will host a job fair in two sessions next Tuesday, July 7, from 8-11 a.m. and from 1-4 p.m. at the Henrico Training Center, 7701 E. Parham Road.

HCPS is seeking candidates for full-time and substitute bus drivers. Members of the HCPS Human Resources and Pupil Transportation Departments will attend to conduct preliminary interviews with interested candidates. > Read more.

Fairfield MS band wins 5 awards

The Fairfield Middle School Band performed at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg during the "Music in the Park" event and brought home five awards for excellence. The band was directed by Kimberly Storrs and Ms. Cook. > Read more.

‘NuckolsPlace’ shopping center planned in Far West End


A new shopping center will sprout at the intersection of Nuckols Road and Twin Hickory Road in Henrico's Far West End.

NuckolsPlace will sit on 15 acres surrounding an existing Walgreens store and will feature about 90,000 square feet of what developers are terming high-end retail. Ukrop's Super Markets, Inc. sold the site to Nuckols Place VFI, L.C., for $8.1 million, the companies announced Thursday. A Ukrop's grocery store had been planned for the site years ago, but then the company was sold to Martin's in 2010. > Read more.

Smoke detector saves family of 5 in Eastern Henrico

The residents of small two story home in Eastern Henrico were awoken early this morning to the sound of a working smoke alarm, which helped save their lives after their house caught fire.

Henrico County Division of Fire units responded to the 200 block of South Fern Avenue for the report of a house fire shortly before 7 a.m. and found heavy fire from the second story window of the residence. Initial fire attack crews learned that the entire family of five had made it out of the house safely. > Read more.

Tougher driving laws for seniors take effect

Stricter driver’s license-renewal rules for older drivers - including accelerated renewal cycles and age-specific in-person renewal procedures - took effect Jan. 1 in Virginia.

A new law lowers the age for mandatory in-person license renewal to 75 from 80. It also shortens the license renewal cycle for drivers 75 and older from every eight years to every five years. > Read more.

HCPS’ ‘ManUp Fatherhood Initiative’ to host workshop for men

If you’re a parent, conflict may seem like a member of the family. While disagreements are part of family life, they don’t have to be painful and destructive. With some knowledge and practice, conflicts can be resolved so that things get done and all sides feel respected. The ManUp Fatherhood Initiative is holding a workshop entitled “Conflict Resolution and Coping Skills,” with guest speaker Frank Manners, on Tuesday, Jan. 13, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Adams Elementary School, 600 South Laburnum Avenue.

The workshop is part of the group’s “ManUp Passport to Success” series of parenting workshops and activities. > Read more.

‘Proof of Heaven’ coming to Glen Allen


Dr. Even Alexander, a New York Times best-selling author who has been featured on Oprah and Dr. Oz, was in town last week to promote his June 27 talk, "Proof of Heaven," at Glen Allen High School.

Alexander (pictured, at right, while Unity of Bon Air church member Harry Simmons interviews him) has written about what he considers to be his journey through the afterlife.

Tickets to this month's event are $25 and will support the new Bon Secours Hospice House being built later this year. > Read more.

Innsbrook Rotary celebrates 25 years


The Innsbrook Rotary Club, which is celebrating its 25th year in 2015, has completed a number of volunteer projects this year and raised thousands of dollars for various organizations through three events.

The club's annual rose sale, benefit for youth live auction and Virginia Fire Games competition, combined with individual and corporate donations, have raised nearly $70,000 – money that the club contributes back to the community.

FeedMore is the beneficiary of the club's 25th anniversary project, which provides refrigerated trailers to be used for the distribution of food throughout Central Virginia. > Read more.

Voltaggio to host three-course dinners at Family Meal July 21-22

Chef Bryan Voltaggio will host a special three-course dinner event July 21-22 at his Willow Lawn Family Meal restaurant. The menu will consist of his favorite dishes and offer diners the chance to purchase a signed copy of his newly released book, HOME.
