Sandston Memorial Day Parade cancelled

UPDATE: MAY 30, 9:45 A.M. – The Eighth Annual American Legion Post 242 & Battlefield Post 144 Sandston Memorial Day Parade has been cancelled, because of anticipated bad weather, organizers announced this morning. The event will not be rescheduled.

Freeman students learn to ‘Drive Smart’


Students signed a banner pledging not to text and drive during a Drive Smart Virginia event at Freeman High School May 26. The event helped show students the dangers of driving while distracted or intoxicated.

Below, Freeman student Rachel Marcus attempts to navigate a path of cones while wearing goggles that simulate the impairment of a 0.15 blood alcohol content level. The goal was to show students how harmful drinking and driving can be. > Read more.

Fresh Air Fund seeks summer host families


The Fresh Air Fund – a program that has provided free summer experiences to New York City children from low-income communities for 140 years – is seeking host families in Central Virginia for this summer.

Thousands of New York City children visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast from North Carolina to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program.

Henrico Police seeks larceny suspect


Henrico Police are seeking a suspect who stole items from a store at The Shops at Willow Lawn Jan. 3.

The suspect, a black male (pictured) described as being between 5 foot 9 and 6 foot 1 in height, entered the business, concealed merchandise and exited without making payment. He was wearing blue jeans, a black hat and a black hooded sweatshirt. > Read more.

Henrico teen named CMoR Snow Queen


Henrico teen Unity Bowling, of Varina, recently was named the Children Museum of Richmond’s 2016 Snow Queen. Bowling won the title through an online vote, defeating two other finalists.

Bowling, who is a junior in high school and is homeschooled, volunteers regularly with Read to Them, Reach Out and Read and the Children's Hospital at VCU. She is a part of Miss America Org and mentors and promotes literacy in the community, advocates for the importance of children being read to from an early age and works with various organizations to promote book drive donations. > Read more.

19th Annual Asian American Celebration planned May 21

The Asian American Society of Central Virginia will hold its 19th Annual Asian American Celebration on Saturday, May 21 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, 403 N. 3rd St. in Richmond, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The theme for this year’s celebration will be “Our Heritage," in recognition of May as the Asian Pacific American Heritage month, designated by the U.S. Congress in 1992. > Read more.

Sandston Founders Club honors Sydnor


The Founders Club of Sandston presented lifetime membership to Charles W. Sydnor at its 12th annual meeting last month.

Sydnor, who grew up in Sandston and later served as president of Emory and Henry College for eight years, was honored by Founder Club President Alice Taylor Baldwin at the April 23 event at Sandston Memorial Recreation Center. > Read more.
