Henrico Health Department offering back-to-school immunization clinics


The Henrico County Health Department will offer back-to-school immunization clinics for children enrolled in pre-K through 12th grade in Henrico County Public Schools. The five clinics will take place Aug. 29-Sept. 2 at the department’s West Clinic facility at 8600 Dixon Powers Drive.

On three days that week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday – immunizations will be by appointment only. Tuesday and Thursday will be walk-in clinics.

The clinics will take place:

• Monday, Aug. 29: Call 804-501-4651 for appointment;

• Tuesday, Aug. 30: 8-11 a.m. (walk-in);

• Wednesday, Aug. 31: Call 804-501-4651 for appointment;

• Thursday, Sept. 1: 12:30-3:30 p.m. (walk-in);

Local doctors partner to combat childhood obesity


Volunteers from Ortho On-Call, Advanced Orthopaedics, a division of OrthoVirginia, U-Turn Sports, and Henrico Police Athletic League met Aug. 25 to sort through and clean more than 1,000 pieces of sports equipment they recently collected through AdvanceItUp!. AIU is a community initiative designed to increase recreation options and
active living at home and outside the home for area kids who do not have access to usable sports equipment. From June 1-30, Advanced Orthopaedics and Ortho On-Call collected gently-used items to benefit deserving children in the region through the partnerships and programs of RVA U-Turn Sports and the Henrico Police Athletic League. > Read more.

Registration for Henrico Citizens Academy opens March 21

Henrico residents can get a firsthand look at county operations and services at the 2016 Henrico Citizens Academy, scheduled for six sessions in April and May. Registration opens at http://www.connect.henricorecandparks.com beginning Monday, March 21.

The free, 15-hour program will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Thursday from April 21 to May 26. The academy is open to 35 residents and participants must be 18 or older. > Read more.

Muthusamy advances to national spelling bee for third straight year


For the third year in a row, Moody Middle School seventh-grader Tejas Muthusamy won the Richmond Times-Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee. With his win March 13 at the Library of Virginia, he advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, where he has been a top-10 finisher each of the past two years.

Muthusamy won the 42nd edition of the annual regional bee when he correctly spelled “versification.” The word refers to the creation of poetry verses. The regional contest featured more than 30 champions representing school divisions from the Northern Neck to Southside Virginia, as well as private-school champions.

He will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the national bee at National Harbor near Washington, as well as a $1,500 scholarship from the newspaper and bee sponsors. > Read more.

Deep Run HS dance marathon celebrates 10 years


The 10th annual Deep Run High School Marathon Dance will be held Mar. 18-19 at the school, and students will add to the more than $1.5 million they've raised for local nonprofits during the event's first nine years.

More than 800 participating students will check in on the evening of Mar. 18 and dance for pledges, leaving 27 hours later. The participants will take breaks and have the option to sleep for two hours. This year, proceeds from the Deep Run Marathon Dance will go to 12 nonprofits:

Free children’s clothing for those in need

The Children's Clothing Closet at Highland Springs United Methodist Church will be open Saturday, Aug. 27 and Tuesday, Aug. 30 to provide free new or nearly new children's clothing for families in need, prior to the start of the school year. The Clothing Closet will be open from 10 a.m. to noon both days. The church is located at 22 North Holly Avenue. > Read more.

Weekend Top 10


It’s a great weekend to get outside! The Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society is offering two events this weekend. Accompany the group to find and document native plants present and blooming in Echo Lake Park on Saturday or take a “Sunday Stroll” at Dorey Park to observe the seasonal changes taking place. Other outdoor events this weekend include the final summer concert at West Broad Village and “Fridays on the Patio” at James River Cellars Winery in Glen Allen.
