County seeks foster parents

The Henrico County Department of Social Services will hold a meeting Thursday, July 11 for individuals and couples who may be interested in providing foster care to county youth.

Henrico has a significant need for foster parents, with 98 children placed in foster care as of April 30, according to Social Services. A total of 53 children entered care during the past year. > Read more.

State offers free tax prep program for eligible residents

A state program is offering eligible Virginians the opportunity to prepare and file their state and federal income taxes online for free using name-brand tax software.

Virginia Free File is a public-private partnership between the Virginia Department of Taxation and the Free File Alliance, a coalition of tax-software companies. > Read more.

Survivor Day planned Feb. 23

The Central Virginia UASI will host its third annual Survivor Day on Saturday, Feb. 23 at various locations throughout the region, including one in Henrico County. The event is designed as a preparedness training program to teach residents how to live safely through natural disasters and other emergencies, such as hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, blizzards and more. > Read more.

School Board approves stricter GPA standards for high school athletes

UPDATE: FEB. 14, 4:46 PM – The Henrico County School Board today voted 4-1 to adopt stricter academic standards for high school athletes, requiring that they maintain 2.0 grade point averages in order to play school-sanctioned sports beginning in the 2013-14 school year.

Three Chopt District representative Diana Winston voted against the item on a technicality, arguing that the standards should have been adopted as new School Board policy rather than merely as updated school system regulations. But she said she strongly supported the tougher standards.

Fundraiser allows fans to drive RIR

The RIR Cares Track Laps program, which allows drivers to bring their own cars onto the Richmond International Raceway track to drive five laps – will return for its second season. In exchange for a $20 donation, drivers can experience the three-quarter-mile raceway from behind their own wheels on one of seven dates this year. RIR Cares is the track's donor-advised fund at The NASCAR Foundation, which assists nonprofits throughout the Greater Richmond Metropolitan Area. > Read more.

Suspects sought in Short Pump robbery

On Feb. 9, 2013 at about 10:40 p.m., two 16 year old males were walking across a parking lot in the 11650 block of West Broad Street when they were approached by two suspects, a black female and a black male. The suspects displayed a handgun and demanded items from the victims. Both victims gave the suspects various personal items to include cash. The suspects were last seen walking on foot.

Shortly before the robbery, the suspects were seen in a convenience store in the area. The male suspect (pictured) was wearing a green and yellow baseball cap. > Read more.

Henrico rabies clinic set for Aug. 6

The Henrico County Division of Police will hold a rabies clinic on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at gate four of Richmond International Raceway.

Shots cost $8, cash only, and include a rabies tag and certificate of inoculation. Cats must be held in pet carriers. Dog owners may purchase a 2011 license for $10 with proof of rabies inoculation. > Read more.

National Night Out events planned tonight

Tonight, neighborhoods throughout Henrico County are joining forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the "28th Annual National Night Out" crime prevention event.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, along with Henrico County Police and TARGET - the national corporate sponsor. Henrico County Police has 96 events registered throughout the county. Virginia Indian Dance Festival comes to Innsbrook

The Virginia Indian Dance Festival, presented by the Virginia Indian Nations, will take place today and tomorrow in Innsbrook at the Snagajob.com Pavilion, 4901 Lakebrook Drive.

The event will feature members of the six Indian nations of the Virginia Indian Tribal Alliance for Life (VITAL) performing traditional Virginia Woodlands’ Indian dances. Visitors will have an opportunity to experience the culture of the Virginia Indians through two 45-minute dance presentations each day showcasing the culture of the Virginia Indians. > Read more.

A community ‘Kaffeehaus’ in Henrico’s Far West End

Born and raised in good old Europe, I am quite familiar with the traditional Austro-Hungarian tradition of the Kaffeehaus, an institution that represents a lifestyle of relaxing and thinking in a familiar environment with coffee, pastry, news, good service, marble tables, subdued sounds like the click-clack of the coffee machine, mugs and plates, conversations among patrons and with staff and a bit of low volume Johann Strauss music.

And so it was a thrill to find a modern version of a Kaffeehaus right here in Henrico County: The Daily Grind, near Short Pump Town Center. > Read more.

Oklahoma tornado victims to benefit from Innsbrook concert

The Innsbrook Foundation will present a special concert June 19 at the Innsbrook Snagajob Pavilion to raise funds benefiting the victims of the Moore and Shawnee communities of Oklahoma.

The Innsbrook After Hours RVA Cares event will feature five bands and a family festival in recognition of the many families devastated by the Oklahoma tornadoes on May 20, which killed 23 people, injured 377 others, and left destroyed and damaged homes affecting 33,000 residents. > Read more.

Food trucks arrive in the West End

West End residents no longer have to pick between fighting the summer mall crowds for a quick bite or breaking the bank to eat at a fine-dining spot because one Richmond group is bringing both to them.

RVA Street Foodies, the organization behind the outdoor food truck courts at the Virginia Historical Society and Hardywood Brewery, debuted its new Henrico food truck court at All Saints Episcopal Church on River Road May 22. > Read more.
