Actors Bernsen, Jones film movie in Henrico
Famed actors Corbin Bernsen and Shirley Jones were in Henrico recently for several days, filming On The Wing, a family-friendly movie whose screenplay was a finalist at the International Family Film Festival and quarter-finalist at the Richmond International Film Festival. The movie filmed for several days at St. Joseph's Villa in Henrico, then moved to the Virginia State Capitol and Doswell. Filming will wrap up Aug. 25, and the movie is expected to be completed by January, then marketed in the U.S. and internationally through RedBox and on Netflix.

The crew of two dozen is composed almost entirely of Richmond-area residents, and the lead actor (19-year-old Brennon Tolbert) is from Virginia Beach. > Read more.

West End Martin’s introduces ‘Caroline’s Cart’

Martin's Food Markets has introduced special shopping carts at its John Rolfe Parkway location in Henrico for parents with special needs children.

"Caroline's Cart" provides parents and caregivers with an option for transporting their children through the store without having to push a wheelchair and traditional cart simultaneously. The location is the first Martin's store in the region to offer the special carts. > Read more.

Napier Realtors ERA was named a Platinum Award winner in the Richmond, Va., market by the Cartus Broker Network at its annual Broker Network International Conference held in February. Cartus is a worldwide leader in employee relocation solutions. Platinum is the highest level of the Excellence Awards presented to principal brokers. Excellence Award recognition is based on performance results related to a wide variety of goals including customer service, cost management, and effective analysis and marketing of homes. Student-run camp assists children of cancer patients

Barbie Quick, a 47-year-old data entry specialist, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. She has been in remission four times since then and endured a long and expensive road to recovery – one that she hasn’t taken alone. Quick’s daughters Kristin, 12, and Rebecca, 15, have dealt with their mom’s cancer for more than half their lives, which hasn’t left them much opportunity simply to be kids.

Police seek suspects in robbery


Henrico Police are seeking a man wanted in connection with a robbery that occurred March 14.

Shawn Michael Thibou, 18, is a suspect in the robbery, which occurred March 14 at approximately 1:20 p.m. in the 4700 block of Cardinal Road. Three suspects robbed an adult male victim, with one assaulting him while the other two stole his wallet and cell phone. The suspects were seen walking towards Wistar Road. The victim sustained minor injuries to his face. No weapons were displayed. > Read more.

HCPS a “Best Community for Music Education” for 15th straight year

For the 15th straight year, Henrico County Public Schools has been named one of the nation’s "Best Communities for Music Education" by the National Association of Music Merchants. HCPS is the only school system in the country to hold the distinction for all 15 years of the designation.

The “Best Communities” designation is based on a detailed survey of a school division’s commitment to music instruction through funding, staffing, access and a commitment to standards. It recognizes collaborative, from-the-ground-up efforts of teachers, administrators, students and parents. > Read more.

Mountain Road Corridor Holiday Celebration planned for Dec. 3

Henrico Division of Recreation and Parks will host the Mountain Road Corridor Holiday Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. beginning at the Courtney Road Service Station, 3401 Mountain Rd., and ending at Meadow Farm Museum, 3400 Mountain Rd. All events are free. > Read more.

Winter bazaar and community festival at Varina H.S. Dec. 3

Varina High School PTSA will host a Winter Bazaar and community festival on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria, 7053 Messer Rd. Gift basket project for senior citizens underway

The Annual Holiday Gift Basket Project, an initiative of Senior Connections, is accepting donations through Dec. 9. The program promotes healthy aging, helps seniors remain independent in their homes and communities, and brings holiday cheer to isolated seniors and those in the greatest need of support.

During the recent years of economic recession, Senior Connections has received an increasing number of calls from seniors seeking assistance. The basket project has helped seniors who often have to choose between paying utility bills, purchasing medications and food or taking care of the rent or mortgage. > Read more.
