Actors Bernsen, Jones film movie in Henrico
Famed actors Corbin Bernsen and Shirley Jones were in Henrico recently for several days, filming On The Wing, a family-friendly movie whose screenplay was a finalist at the International Family Film Festival and quarter-finalist at the Richmond International Film Festival. The movie filmed for several days at St. Joseph's Villa in Henrico, then moved to the Virginia State Capitol and Doswell. Filming will wrap up Aug. 25, and the movie is expected to be completed by January, then marketed in the U.S. and internationally through RedBox and on Netflix.

The crew of two dozen is composed almost entirely of Richmond-area residents, and the lead actor (19-year-old Brennon Tolbert) is from Virginia Beach. > Read more.

Contraception rights activists rally outside Supreme Court

Women’s choice advocates rallied outside the Supreme Court this past Tuesday in support of the Affordable Care Act birth-control benefit as the oral arguments in the Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood v. Sebelius were heard.

Despite the frigid temperatures and precipitation, representatives of NARAL, Planned Parenthood, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health and other volunteers from across the state and the country shared the message: birth control is not my boss’ business. > Read more.

‘Beyond Barbie’ designed to empower women

Although Susan Singer’s life has handed her challenges, she was always able to prevail and find strength through art, which has inspired Beyond Barbie, Singer’s unique series at Crossroads Art Center that begins March 28. The series will feature performances and discussions from diverse, passionate females; it aims to instill the same strength and empowerment in other women.

Singer began the series in 2011 in conjunction with her art show Not Barbie, a series of paintings of female nudes of every size, shape, age and race to provoke society to expand its definition of beauty. > Read more.

West End Martin’s introduces ‘Caroline’s Cart’

Martin's Food Markets has introduced special shopping carts at its John Rolfe Parkway location in Henrico for parents with special needs children.

"Caroline's Cart" provides parents and caregivers with an option for transporting their children through the store without having to push a wheelchair and traditional cart simultaneously. The location is the first Martin's store in the region to offer the special carts. > Read more.

Cartus is a worldwide leader in employee relocation solutions. Platinum is the highest level of the Excellence Awards presented to principal brokers. Excellence Award recognition is based on performance results related to a wide variety of goals including customer service, cost management, and effective analysis and marketing of homes. Student-run camp assists children of cancer patients

Barbie Quick, a 47-year-old data entry specialist, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. She has been in remission four times since then and endured a long and expensive road to recovery – one that she hasn’t taken alone. Quick’s daughters Kristin, 12, and Rebecca, 15, have dealt with their mom’s cancer for more than half their lives, which hasn’t left them much opportunity simply to be kids.

Holiday festival at Willow Lawn Dec. 3

The Shops at Willow Lawn will host its holiday festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hope Harris and the Cousins Jamboree, Peter McCory and Jonathan the Juggler will perform on the Main Stage. Barksdale Theatre's Snowbear will also make a special appearance.

Valentine exhibit explores county's history in photographs

Photographs that span more than a century and help tell the stories of everyday life in Henrico County during that span are on display as part of a new exhibit at the Valentine Richmond History Center downtown.

"Into Focus: Henrico County through the Camera" – a collaborative exhibit with Henrico County featuring about 50 photographs of the county from as far back as 1899 – opened Oct. 13 and will continue through March. Photos in the exhibit document each of the county's five magisterial districts and are arranged by district, curator Meg Hughes said. The exhibit is designed to celebrate Henrico's 400th anniversary this year. > Read more.

Richmond Quilter’s Guild tri-annual show at Richmond International Raceway

The Richmond Quilter’s Guild will present its tri-annual show from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 21 and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 22-23 at Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum Ave. Over 300 quilts will be on display plus raffle quilts, demonstrations, vendors and door prizes. > Read more.
