Malvern Hill Farm under contract


A historic Eastern Henrico farm – the site of a bloody Civil War battle in 1862 – will be preserved in its entirety, thanks to the Capital Region Land Conservancy.

The CRLC has agreed to purchase Malvern Hill Farm (which is about 875 acres in size and straddles Eastern Henrico and Charles City County) for its appraised value of $6.56 million. The sellers are by descendants of William Heighler Ferguson Sr., who originally purchased Malvern Hill Farm in 1939.

“In one transaction CRLC is taking a giant step in protecting the natural and historic land and water resources of our region,” said Parker C. Agelasto, executive director of Capital Region Land Conservancy. > Read more.

McClellan declared Democratic nominee for Va. Ninth District Senate seat


Jennifer McClellan has been declared the Democratic Party's candidate for Virginia's Ninth District state Senate seat by the Legislative Nominating Committee of the Democratic Party. The party canceled a planned caucus Dec. 3 because McClellan was the only candidate who filed for the nomination.

A special election for the seat, vacated by Donald McEachin after his election to Congress Nov. 8, will be held Jan. 10. > Read more.

50-year Beth Sholom employee honored


Mary Delores Lee recently celebrated 50 years of service at Beth Sholom Lifecare Community, where she is known fondly as "Miss Mary." She joined the dietary department at Beth Sholom Home for the Jewish Aged five decades ago, when it was still located at Libbie and Fitzhugh avenues in Richmond. She continued with the organization after it relocated to Henrico's Far West End in the late 1980s and now continues to work there two days a week.

“I just love the residents, and I tell the younger staff to always be kind and fair to the residents," she said. > Read more.

Third person sought in Williamsburg Road homicide investigation

Henrico Police are seeking a third person of interest in an investigation into the homicide of Sandston resident Walter Adams, Jr. Police are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the individual pictured above in an "American Vandals" shirt. project:HOMES’ ‘Renew Crew’ helps Henrico citizen


The project:HOMES "Renew Crew" (above) recently assisted an elderly member of the Laurel Presbyterian Church in Henrico by clearing brush, trimming hedges and raking leaves in her yard.

The Renew Crew serves low-income, disabled and elderly homeowners in need of small-scale home repairs such as porch, railing and step repairs, exterior painting, clearing overgrown yards, tearing down outbuildings, wheelchair ramps and other critical repairs and accessibility modifications. > Read more.

Alzheimer’s Walk raises $436,000


More than 2,000 people participated in the the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Richmond Chapter's annual Richmond Walk to End Alzheimer’s Nov. 5 at Markel Plaza in Innsbrook. The event raised more than $436,000 for Alzheimer’s care, support programs and research.

The event is one of three walks that benefit the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Richmond and is held in celebration of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and National Family Caregivers Month.

Donations to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be accepted through the end of the year and can be made at http://www.alz.org/walk. In total, the three walks this year have raised more than $644,344. > Read more.
