Bagby falls short in 74th District primary

Kevin Sullivan wins Democratic nomination, will compete in Jan. 13 special election

DEC. 23, 11 A.M. – Henrico County School Board member Lamont Bagby fell several votes short in his attempt to win the Democratic nomination to seek the 74th District House of Delegates seat in a Jan. 13 special election.

Bagby lost by eight votes – 24 to 16 – in a firehouse primary to Charles City resident Kevin Sullivan, a former International Brotherhood of Teamsters political coordinator. Former 74th District representative Floyd Miles finished third.

Only about 100 Democrats in the district (which spans portions of Henrico and Richmond and all of Charles City County) were eligible to vote – those who are active members of the Democratic committees in one of the three localities – and only a few more than 40 turned out. > Read more.

Short Pump Town Center completes enhancements

Short Pump Town Center has completed a multimillion-dollar renovation that took place during the past several months.

The center has added landscaping, walkways lit with hanging lanterns, new gathering spaces withseating under heated pavilions, fountains, a new pedestrian bridge spanning the main plaza, additional covered bridges, updated restrooms, a centrally located glass elevator, a new children's play village in the food court and an outdoor play area in the main plaza, in addition to a fireplace. > Read more.

Chamber, colleges unite to create intern clearinghouse

The Greater Richmond Chamber, in partnership with the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University, recently launched RVAIntern.com, a website through which businesses in the Richmond region can recruit qualified interns from colleges and universities in Central Virginia.

The one-stop site allows employers to submit their internship needs simultaneously to seven schools. Prior to the site's launch, businesses had to visit the websites of each of the seven participating schools to post opportunities to each one. > Read more.

Southwest to complete its Richmond conversion

Southwest Airlines will complete its full conversion in the Richmond market Aug. 10 when it launches service to Atlanta, taking over the route from its AirTran subsidiary.

Southwest will serve the Richmond-Atlanta route with larger aircraft than AirTran uses. The low-cost carrier will fly 143-seat Boeing 737 jets on that route, replacing AirTran's 117-seat jets. > Read more.

St. Gertrude receives challenge grant for Henrico athletic facility


The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation recently awarded a $100,000 challenge grant in support of Saint Gertrude High School’s campaign to build the school’s first Outdoor Athletic Center (OAC.) The challenge grant will help complete construction on the $2.5 million facility at 490 Scott Road in northern Henrico County, which opened in late 2012.

The school must raise $100,000 in matching gifts from all sources in order to qualify for the grant. New or increased gifts or pledges qualify as matching gifts.

“The grant comes at a crucial time in our campaign,” said Susan Walker, president of Saint Gertrude High School. > Read more.

Andrew Tilghman, age 9, was one of several family members of "Make-a-Wish kids" who got a special treat Dec. 2 at Dave & Buster’s Restaurant in West Broad Village, with the help of the Harlem Globetrotters and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Virginia. Globetrotters Firefly Fisher (pictured above, with Andrew), Slick Willie Shaw, and the legendary Curly Neal hosted a pre-Christmas Parade party at which five children (including Andrew's sister) enjoyed food, drinks and free game cards with their families. > Read more.

Henrico woman wins $200k

Henrico resident Felicia Walker went to A&A Convenience Store on Hungary Spring Road in Henrico recently to play the Virginia Lottery's Cash 5 game, but the clerk was on the phone and couldn't assist her. So, instead, she bought a pair of $200,000 Jackpot scratcher tickets and took them home with her. One turned out to be the third of seven grand-prize winners. > Read more.
