Glen Allen mother earns $7K ‘Parentpreneur’ grant


A Glen Allen mother and entrepreneur recently earned a $7,000 grant from The First Years, a juvenile products manufacturer, to help make her childhood clothing invention a reality.

Casey Bunn, who has two children (three-year-old Jillian and one-year-old Charlie) created Handsocks to solve a problem – the need for long, cozy, sock-like mittens that keep babies and older children warm while also providing protection from scratches and skin conditions. > Read more.

Henricopolis SWCD honors its stars at Assemblage


A century or so ago, Henrico County was known as the Dairy County of Virginia, and one of the largest dairy operations was centered at the Dorey family's barn in Varina.

On Jan. 7, the barn – now the site of the Dorey Park Recreation Center – was transformed into an art gallery, and its rafters hung with colorful student art work depicting nature scenes. > Read more.

SR-71 moving from Virginia Aviation Museum


One of the most visible exhibits at the Virginia Aviation Museum in Sandston is on its way to a new home.

The world’s fastest and highest flying production aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird, is preparing to move from the museum to the Science Museum of Virginia. The iconic, supersonic stealth plane will become the focal point of the SMVs new exhibition gallery, Speed, opening later this year.

Before traveling to its new home, the Blackbird will be disassembled and packaged by experts from Worldwide Aircraft Recovery and W.M. Jordan Company. > Read more.

Godwin student selected for national thespian event

Amy Ariel, a 15-year-old rising junior at Godwin High School, is still basking in the theatrical glow she experienced after being selected as one of four students in the nation to work on the lighting crew for a production held during the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska in June.

During the festival, held June 22-27 at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln), Ariel worked on the crew of The Music of Menken, which honored Alan Menken, a musical production designer for Disney who has worked on Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Little Shop of Horrors and many others.

The weeklong celebration of thespians and theater enthusiasts featured college scholarship auditions, 50 various workshops and full-length, one-act and individual performances. > Read more.

Former Henrico PAL participant now serves as program counselor

In only eight years of existence, Henrico Police Athletic League (PAL) has grown from a single, small after-school program to a series of sports camps, summer camps, recreational and after-school programs serving several hundred children each year.

Four years ago, Henrico PAL also won national recognition as Aubrey Temple of the Youth Leadership Council and board member Johnny Newman were honored as "Male Youth of the Year" and "Male Volunteer of the Year" at the national conference. > Read more.

New Orleans native who landed in Henrico after Katrina reflects after 10 years

Ten years ago when Hurricane Katrina threatened New Orleans, Cain Bassett and his family left their home in the city's West Bank area and headed to the Louis Armstrong International Airport.

Not to take a flight out of harm's way, but to hunker down until the impending massive storm passed.

In 2005, Bassett, who now lives in western Henrico County, was employed by Delaware North. He helped manage the company's 20 restaurants and bars that lined the New Orleans airport's concourses.

In the long hours before Karina hit, the company allowed Bassett, his wife, their two children, as well as a few other employees, to take refuge at the airport. > Read more.

Architect of World Trade Center Memorial to speak in Henrico


Michael Arad, the architect of the World Trade Center Memorial, will be the keynote speaker for The 2016 Adolf-Adams JCC Forum on Sat., Jan. 30, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., at the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center in Henrico.

Arad’s “Reflecting Absence” architectural design was selected from more than 5,000 competitive entries as the template for the Memorial’s construction in New York City. During the forum, Arad will discuss the significance and symbolism of the design, as well as his inspiration. The event, which is a highlight of the Weinstein JCC’s Patron of the Arts series, is open to the public > Read more.

Environmental Film Festival planned for February


The Sixth Annual RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) will be held Feb. 1-7, 2016 at various locations, including in Henrico County.

A partnership of The Enrichmond Foundation, Capital Region Land Conservancy, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Falls of the James Group - Sierra Club, the festival will feature a number of insightful films designed to raise awareness of environmental issues relative to all residents of the planet and Richmond citizens in particular.

A detailed schedule will be released at a time closer to the festival, but the popular children's portion has been set for Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown. > Read more.
