Glen Allen advances in 14U Babe Ruth World Series


The Glen Allen Babe Ruth Baseball League 14-year-old all-star team advanced to the single-elimination round of the 14-year-old World Series, which the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association is hosting at RF&P Stadium in Glen Allen.

Earnhardt gives Redskins a ride


Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88, stopped at Richmond Raceway Aug. 8 in advance of the track’s NASCAR weekend in September. He was joined by five players from the Washington Redskins, who were in town for the team's training camp, which concluded Aug. 14. The day in Richmond gave Earnhardt and the Redskins players an opportunity to see how the athletes compete in their respective sports.

READ Center a finalist for $25k grant


The READ Center is a top-200 cause finalist in State Farm’s Neighborhood Assist program, making it eligible to earn a $25,000 grant to support adult literacy in the Richmond region. The 40 organizations from across the nation with the most votes will win grants.

The READ Center, based in Henrico, provides classroom instruction and one-to-one tutoring to adults with very low literacy.

Henrico Christmas Mother program’s ‘Christmas in July’ kickoff social planned


Henrico Restaurant Week will sponsor a kickoff social on Wednesday, July 15, at Mosaic Restaurant on River Road to support the Henrico Christmas Mother program, the beneficiary of Henrico Restaurant Week Oct. 2-11.

Admission is free, and there will be free food, happy hour specials, a chance to bid on silent auction items (such as restaurant gift certificates, artwork, Richmond Flying Squirrels tickets and more) and a chance to meet Henrico Christmas Mother Beverly Cocke. Donations to the Christmas Mother program also will be accepted. All silent auction proceeds will benefit the program.

New partnership centered on family

Effort combines government, community and faith groups
A new collaborative community group, the Henrico Partnership for Family and Community Engagement, is in the works, with a focus on building healthy communities through family stability and building partnerships between regional organizations to create collective efforts.

Group organizers believe that family stability is essential to building healthy communities and that it's important to engage parents in their children’s lives – with equal importance placed on the involvement of the mother and the father. The group seeks to create opportunities for growth between families and community partners.

Henrico resident wins $10,000 scholarship


Henrico resident Haley Malloy was awarded the seventh-annual Anthony A. Martino Memorial Scholarship by The Goddard School last month. The $10,000 scholarship was open nationally to any seniors in high school who graduated from The Goddard School Pre-K or Kindergarten program. It is presented to one applicant who has demonstrated the work ethic and perseverance that exemplified Anthony A. Martino, the founder of The Goddard School franchise system. Goddard Systems, Inc. CEO Joe Schumacher (pictured, second from left) traveled to Henrico to make the presentation.
