Free weekly 5k coming to Henrico

The Richmond metro area is no stranger to 5k races and events. To participate in most 5k events, runners must register and pay a fee. But the Parkrun organization will be providing Henrico County with a free 5k every Saturday at Deep Run Park starting June 3.

Parkrun began in England in 2004 and eventually found its way to the U.S.

The Deep Run Parkrun program will be the 10th one in the U.S., said Darrell Stanaford, the country manager for Parkrun USA.

County’s internship program grows

Since the Henrico County government internship program began its pilot program in 2012 with only two interns, it has transformed to become a year-long program that provides students at the high school and college level the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with local government, while also providing a vital resource for the community.

Noelle Bingham, 32, entered her first semester at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community college in the fall. After returning to school she realized that she wanted to gain real experience in her desired professional field, and that’s when she turned to the Henrico internship program.

Bingham works with the Division of Fire, reporting to Chief Rosenbaum three days a week and focusing on developing marketing materials and performing graphics work, such as redesigning brochures for hiring, fire prevention, festivals and more.
