Glen Allen advances in 14U Babe Ruth World Series


The Glen Allen Babe Ruth Baseball League 14-year-old all-star team advanced to the single-elimination round of the 14-year-old World Series, which the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association is hosting at RF&P Stadium in Glen Allen.

Earnhardt gives Redskins a ride


Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88, stopped at Richmond Raceway Aug. 8 in advance of the track’s NASCAR weekend in September. He was joined by five players from the Washington Redskins, who were in town for the team's training camp, which concluded Aug. 14. The day in Richmond gave Earnhardt and the Redskins players an opportunity to see how the athletes compete in their respective sports.

READ Center a finalist for $25k grant


The READ Center is a top-200 cause finalist in State Farm’s Neighborhood Assist program, making it eligible to earn a $25,000 grant to support adult literacy in the Richmond region. The 40 organizations from across the nation with the most votes will win grants.

The READ Center, based in Henrico, provides classroom instruction and one-to-one tutoring to adults with very low literacy.

Henrico native helps lead groundbreaking ‘New Horizons’ mission to Pluto

Last month, Henrico native Alice Bowman saw 14 years of work come to fruition when the New Horizons spacecraft made its closest approach to Pluto and collected unprecedented data and images of the dwarf planet.

Bowman (pictured above, and below, with NASA Administrator Charles Bolden), who began the initial stages of the project in 2001, is the first female Missions Operations Manager (MOM) in the history of Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Lab (APL). Throughout her life, Bowman has earned a degree from the University of Virginia, worked in three states, made history as the first female MOM at APL and shown Earth what Pluto looks like.

Her entire journey, though, began in the West End of Richmond off Three Chopt Road.

Deep Run student performs with elite touring drum corps


A Deep Run High School junior is spending his summer touring the United States as part of the Southern New Jersey marching ensemble, a self-described world-class group competing on the Drum Corps International tour.

John Kresge, 16, is one of 149 members who have dedicated most of their summers to competing in this competition. As Drum Corps International’s website states, the tour truly is the major league of marching music. Kresge said his first show, which was at the New England Patriots’ Gillette Stadium, filled the stadium about halfway with fans – that’s about 34,000 people.

Henrico students show improvement on SOLs

But pass rates fall below state averages in 3 of 5 core subject areas
UPDATE: AUG. 11, 11:15 A.M. – Henrico County public school students improved their performances on the state's Standards of Learning tests during the 2014-15 school year but still fell slightly below the statewide pass-rate averages in three of five core subject areas, according to statistics released today by the Virginia Department of Education.

Henrico students exceeded the state pass-rate averages in history/social sciences and science but fell slightly below the state averages in reading, writing and mathematics.

Of the 29 tests taken by Henrico County students in grades 3-8 and high school in reading, writing, history and social studies, math and science, the percentage of students who earned passing scores increased on 17 tests from the 2013-14 school year. The pass rate remained the same on five other tests and decreased on seven tests.
