Crime Stoppers’ Crime of the Week – June 26, 2017


Richmond detectives need the public’s help to identify the vehicle and suspects in the shooting incident of a 7-year-old boy and an adult male. Can you help Crime Stoppers solve this latest shooting?

The shooting occurred in the 1500 block of North 22nd Street in the Fairmount neighborhood of the city. Officers arrived and found the two victims near a bus stop.

Richmond Montessori School earns VAIS reaccreditation


Richmond Montessori School, an independent Montessori school for children ages 2 to 14, recently earned reaccreditation from the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. The VAIS accreditation program is one of only a few recognized at the national level through the National Association of Independent School's Commission on Accreditation and is also recognized and approved by the Virginia Board of Education through the Virginia Council for Private Education.

Neil Burton, the founder of Strangeways Brewing in Henrico, will serve on the 2017-18 Leadership Council of The Virginia Craft Brewers Guild (VCBG). Burton will share the chairmanship of the Marketing & Tourism Committee with Kevin Erskine of Coelacanth Brewing. Other local brewers in leadership positions include Eric McKay of Hardywood Park Craft Brewery (VCBG chair), Hunter Smith of Champion Brewing Company (co-chair of the Government Affairs Committee) and Kate Lee of Hardywood (co-chair of the Quality Committee).

Cavs care


Members of the UVA Club of Richmond accompanied several residents of The Virginia Home to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in April as part of "Cavs Care Month."

Residents of the facility, which provides nursing, therapeutic and residential care to adults with irreversible physical disabilities, enjoyed a an afternoon exploring the gardens and the "Butterflies Live!" exhibition.

Schools embrace financial literacy program


A financial literacy program called Banzai has made its way into the curriculum of Henrico County Public Schools and is meant to expose students to financial responsibilities.

Henrico Federal Credit Union started sponsoring the financial literacy program in 2012, and its engagement in the program gives teachers the opportunity to provide an innovative, high-quality experience to their students at no cost.

“The goal was to focus on improving financial literacy for the rising generations who would soon be facing financial decision in their lives,” said Banzai spokesperson Rachel Yentes. “This program also creates a relationship between students and their sponsor, who can help them with financial decisions in the future. Banzai is fun and engaging, which helps students to enjoy learning about financial literacy and most importantly, remember what they are learning."

State, Ancestry.com complete Virginia’s vital records digitization


A two-year collaboration between the Virginia Department of Health and Ancestry.com has resulted in the complete digitization of Virginia's vital records. More than 16 million records have been digitized and indexed, with scanned images of the original public documents available online through Ancestry.com. (In Virginia, death, marriage and divorce data become "public" information 25 years after the event and birth data 100 years after.)

Access to the indexed information on the records is available free of charge through VDH’s Division of Vital Records’ and the Library of Virginia’s websites.
