Henrico real estate staying strong despite low inventory

The Henrico real estate market has been relatively strong for the past month, despite a lower amount of inventory, according to data from Long and Foster Real Estate.

In the past month, 408 homes have been sold in Henrico, which is 2 percent less than were sold in the same timeframe in 2016.

Last year the median sale prices for Henrico homes was $219,975, whereas this month it's up to $232,500, a 6 percent increase. Which means half of the homes in Henrico are priced above $232,500 and half are priced below.

Smither named director of Henrico’s Department of Finance

Henrico County Manager John A. Vithoulkas has appointed Edward N. “Ned” Smither Jr. to serve as director of the Department of Finance, effective July 1.

Smither has served Henrico since 2013 as director of the Accounting Division in Finance. He will succeed Eugene H. Walter, who has delayed his retirement until June 30 to ensure an orderly transition within the department.

State honors EMS officials this week

There were nearly 1.5 million emergency medical services calls and 4,063 incidents per day in Virginia just last year.

This week, May 21-27, declared as National EMS week by Gov. Terry McAuliffe, recognizes the more than 34,000 EMS personnel and 631 agencies in the state and commends their efforts and commitment to Commonwealth citizens.

‘Project Plant It!’ visits Glen Allen ES


Glen Allen Elementary School third-graders enjoyed an interactive "Tree Trivia" assembly hosted April 21 by Dominion Resources and Power UP!, an entertainment company that partners with Dominion’s Project Plant It! program to teach students about trees and the environment.

Ranger Spruce Sassafras led students in a game-show style competition during which teams teams tested their knowledge of tree trivia.

More than 44,000 elementary students in six states, including elementary students in Henrico County Public Schools and other school systems throughout metro Richmond, are participating in Project Plant It! this spring.

Candidates for G.A. seats to appear at May 12 forum


Democratic candidates for the 74th District Virginia House of Delegates seat and Republican candidates for the 12th District Virginia Senate seat are expected to appear at the Henrico County Candidates Town Hall Forum, hosted jointly by the Henrico County NAACP Branch and Henrico Minsters Conference Tuesday, May 12, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at St. Peter Baptist Church, 2040 Mountain Road in Glen Allen.

Both parties will hold primary elections June 9 to select their party nominees. Announced candidates for the Democratic nomination in the 74th District – a seat vacated by Democrat Joe Morrissey earlier this year – are Fairfield District School Board member Lamont Bagby, former Richmond mayor Leonidas B. Young II and Stephen Adkins.

Eight displaced by Northside fire

Eight adults were displaced by an apartment fire this afternoon in Henrico's Northside.

The fire broke out at about 1:23 p.m. in the 5500 block of Cardiff Court. Firefighters arrived within three minutes to find heavy smoke and fire in one of the apartments. All three residents of that unit escaped without injury.
