Kevin Sullivan wins Democratic nomination, will compete in Jan. 13 special election

DEC. 23, 11 A.M. – Henrico County School Board member Lamont Bagby fell several votes short in his attempt to win the Democratic nomination to seek the 74th District House of Delegates seat in a Jan. 13 special election.
Bagby lost by eight votes – 24 to 16 – in a firehouse primary to Charles City resident Kevin Sullivan, a former International Brotherhood of Teamsters political coordinator. Former 74th District representative Floyd Miles finished third.
Only about 100 Democrats in the district (which spans portions of Henrico and Richmond and all of Charles City County) were eligible to vote – those who are active members of the Democratic committees in one of the three localities – and only a few more than 40 turned out. > Read more.

Short Pump Town Center has completed a multimillion-dollar renovation that took place during the past several months.
The center has added landscaping, walkways lit with hanging lanterns, new gathering spaces withseating under heated pavilions, fountains, a new pedestrian bridge spanning the main plaza, additional covered bridges, updated restrooms, a centrally located glass elevator, a new children's play village in the food court and an outdoor play area in the main plaza, in addition to a fireplace. > Read more.

Hundreds of people crowded Osborne Boat Landing in Varina to watch the James River Boat Parade of Lights Dec. 8. Attendees enjoyed music, hot chocolate and food while they waited for – and later watched – about two dozen decorated boats cruise along the James River. > Read more.

The Henrico County Department of Social Services is looking for families to be trained as foster parents as the need for foster home placements has increased during the past year. Henrico has 94 children in foster care, up from 73 children in October 2011.
An orientation meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3 in the Board Room of the Henrico Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive. > Read more.

Arthur Ashe Elementary School and Varina High School are teaming up to gather school supplies for two schools in Far Rockaway, N.Y. that were devastated by Superstorm Sandy. All items will be packaged and sent to the town with a teacher who will be traveling to New York for the holidays and will then be dispersed to the schools. > Read more.

Henrico residents can recycle their Christmas trees after the holidays at one of several locations in the county.
From Dec. 26 through Jan. 11, trees will be accepted at the following spots:
• Springfield Road Landfill Public Use Area, near Nuckols Road and I-295 – open from 7:30 am to 7 pm daily, except holidays;

CVWMA curbside recycling collection and trash collections will have a one day delay in collections Dec. 25-26 and Jan. 1-2. There will be no collections on Dec. 25 or Jan. 1.
Curbside recycling collections Monday through Wednesday will be on regular schedule. Red Thursday and Red Friday curbside recyclers will have a one day delay in collection services Dec. 25-26. Blue Thursday and Blue Friday curbside recyclers will have one day delay in collection services Jan. 1-2. Containers should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will host a candlelight vigil of remembrance and hope Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at the University of Richmond, outside the Cannon Chapel.
