Ruritans honor Varina students


The Varina Ruritan Club annually sponsors an environmental poster and essay contest for Varina Elementary School students each March. The club recently invited winners of this year's contest and their families to attend its monthly meeting, at which the students were honored and recognized.

Henrico man wins $1M in Va. Lottery


Sometimes being wrong isn’t such a bad thing. When Charles Bibbs discovered he’d matched the first five numbers in the April 21 Mega
Millions drawing, he figured he’d won $250,000, and he was excited about it.

“I had to look at the ticket 20 or 30 times,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it.”

It turns out the Henrico man was wrong. He hadn’t won $250,000. His ticket was actually worth $1 million. > Read more.

Suspect(s) sought in larceny of checks

Henrico Police are seeking a suspect or suspects in connection with a case of stolen checks.

Sometime between April 5-6, numerous checks that had been deposited in drop boxes at several apartment complexes in the 9300-9500 block of West Broad Street and the 400 block of North Airport Drive were stolen. The checks were written as payment for rent. Two people (possibly males) of interest in these thefts are pictured above (at right), while the image to the left shows a possible third male subject of interest. > Read more.

Police find body in Sandston hotel

Henrico Police found a 32-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound at the Legacy Inn in the 5200 block of Airport Square Lane in Sandston May 9 at 1:10 a.m. The man was identified Friday as Thomas Randall of Roanoke.

Detectives are following up on leads as they continue their investigation. Police have not released information about suspects. > Read more.

Transportation board, commissioner approve contracts for Henrico work

In March and April, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Commissioner of Highways Greg Whirley approved several contracts affecting Henrico County.

The CTB issued a contract to American Infrastructure - VA Inc. of Glen Allen for $7.7 million to mill and pave various sections of I-95 south between mile marker 94 in Hanover County and Parham Road (mile marker 83) in Henrico County; work began recently and will be completed in November. > Read more.

Henrico High School to host ethics and leadership conference

Henrico High School's Leadership and Ethics Society will host an Ethics and Leadership Conference and Workshop Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be group discussions, guest speakers and a keynote address from Col. Gerald Massengill, the former superintendent of the Virginia State Police. Massengill served as the chair of the governor's review panel for the Virginia Tech mass shooting and led the Commonwealth's law enforcement response to the September 11th attacks as well as the 2002 sniper shootings. > Read more.

Anthem ‘LemonAid’ registration opens


Last summer, hundreds of Anthem LemonAid stands dotted Central Virginia and raised more than $100,000 in support of cancer treatment and research at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR). This July 17-19, Anthem is inviting community members to host an Anthem LemonAid stand in support of the children who are battling the disease. During the past 13 summers, Anthem LemonAid has raised more than $1 million. All funds raised support the Hematology and Oncology Clinic at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU.

Anthem LemonAid is Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ signature summer event. It’s free to participate and is designed for children, families, community groups and businesses alike. > Read more.

Tree seedling giveaway planned April 2-3


The Henricopolis Soil & Water Conservation District will sponsor a tree seedling giveaway on April 2 at Dorey Park Shelter 1 from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on April 3 at Hermitage High School parking lot from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Bare-root tree seedlings are available to Henrico County residents free of charge for the spring planting season.

The following seedling species will be available: apple, kousa dogwood, red maple, river birch, red osier dogwood, loblolly pine, sycamore, bald cypress, white dogwood and redbud. Quantities are limited and trees are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each participant is allowed up to 10 trees total, not to include more than five of the same species. > Read more.

State provides online directory of Bingo games


Wondering where to go to play Bingo? Wonder no more.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) recently launched an online directory of permitted bingo games played in Virginia. Listed by locality, more than 400 regular games are available across the state. The directory will be updated monthly and can be found on VDACS’ website at http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/gaming/index.shtml.
