UniverSoul Circus tour of ‘US’ at Richmond International Raceway

The UniverSoul Circus’ 2012 tour titled “US” will be at Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum, March 13-18.

“US” features a family-friendly global mix of circus artistry, music, theatre, dance and style. Highlights include Shaolin Kung Fu acrobats from China, bone-breaking contortionists with a hip-hop flair from Guinea, acrobatic comedy from South Africa, pro-style hip-hop dancers from the United States and an all-male Russian Bar act from Cuba. The international cast includes 80 world-class acrobats, contortionists, aerialists, martial artists, dancers, comedians, clowns, tigers and elephants.

Virginia Randolph Education Center to host open house on Nov. 9

Virginia Randolph Education Center (VREC), which provides educational services to students with special needs, will hold an open house to showcase new materials and equipment on Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. VREC received a special education grant that allowed them to renovate parts of their facility and invest in new and innovative learning tools for special needs children.

“Hunt for Henrico History” scheduled for Nov. 5 at Eastern Henrico Rec Center

Henrico County’s 400th anniversary celebration will turn the spotlight onto community and family history at the “Hunt for Henrico History,” set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, 1440 N. Laburnum Ave. “Hunt for Henrico History” will explore the county’s diverse history through living-history presentations and historical displays highlighting neighborhoods, schools, churches and civic organizations.

Program on Pocahontas, Rocke Hall at Henricus Nov. 5

Henricus Historical Park, 251 Henricus Park Rd. in Chester, will present “Pocahontas, Rocke Hall and the Powhatan People” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5. The program will feature Rocke Hall, home to Rev. Alexander Whitaker, who tutored Pocahontas at Henricus. The life of Pocahontas at Henricus will also be examined at the event, as well as the significant impact neighboring Virginia Indians had on the English colonists.

Headless Horseman returns to West Broad Village Oct. 29

West Broad Village: The Headless Horseman Returns, a free and family-friendly event featuring Halloween-themed performers, candy and children’s games, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at West Broad Village in Short Pump.

Bluegrass with a 21st century flair coming to CACGA

The Dixie Bee-Liners will perform at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd., on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. Combining blues and folk-rock influences with bluegrass and old-time mountain music, this award-winning ensemble creates a sound steeped in tradition, but with modern tones and rhythms. At their performance, the audience will hear many of the band's original repertoire – bluegrass barn-burners, ballads, and instrumentals – as well as Appalachian standards that have become true American classics.

Richmond Quilter’s Guild tri-annual show at Richmond International Raceway

The Richmond Quilter’s Guild will present its tri-annual show from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 21 and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 22-23 at Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum Ave. Over 300 quilts will be on display plus raffle quilts, demonstrations, vendors and door prizes.

Latin Ballet Presents “El Dia de los Muertos” Festival at Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen


The Latin Ballet of Virginia will present a weekend of Hispanic heritage at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd. El Dia de los Muertos Festival, a family-focused event, will be held Oct. 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The “Day of the Dead” is a celebration of one of the most traditional Mexican festivities and embraces the cycle of life. There will be music, arts and crafts, food, vendors, dancing, art exhibits and more.

Kenya Safari Acrobats to perform at CACGA

The Kenya Safari Acrobats – a high-spirited troupe from Africa – will perform twice at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen on Thursday, Feb. 3. Shows will be held at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The group promotes African circus entertainment throughout the world. (Africa is being recognized internationally as the birthplace of the circus.)
