Coffee, anyone?


Virginia Repertory Theatre will host theater enthusiasts and intrigued patrons for the latest in its monthly installment of “Coffee and Conversations” on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at its Willow Lawn location, featuring an inside look behind French Connection: Duquesnay to Moliere.

Virginia Rep has been hosting similar gatherings for the past five seasons. The program serves as an audience engagement opportunity to educate patrons about the process of the theater, the various programs and how it works.

Capitol Steps, UkeFest highlight CACGA’s 2013-14 season

The second-annual UkeFest VA, fifth-annual Djangoary Music Soiree and an appearance this week by The Capitol Steps highlight The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen's 2013-14 season, which was announced last month.

The center will host 13 performances as part of its Center Season, nine as part of its 2nd Stage series and four special events.

"In fulfilling our mission, we continually seek out excellent performers so we can present stellar performances," said CACGA President K Alferio.

UniverSoul Circus tour of ‘US’ at Richmond International Raceway

The UniverSoul Circus’ 2012 tour titled “US” will be at Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum, March 13-18.

“US” features a family-friendly global mix of circus artistry, music, theatre, dance and style. Highlights include Shaolin Kung Fu acrobats from China, bone-breaking contortionists with a hip-hop flair from Guinea, acrobatic comedy from South Africa, pro-style hip-hop dancers from the United States and an all-male Russian Bar act from Cuba. The international cast includes 80 world-class acrobats, contortionists, aerialists, martial artists, dancers, comedians, clowns, tigers and elephants.

Chinese New Year celebration at Deep Run H.S. Jan. 22

The Organization of Chinese Americans will host the Richmond Lunar New Year celebration on Sunday, Jan. 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Deep Run High School, 4801 Twin Hickory Rd.

The celebration, in honor of the Year of the Dragon, will feature classic Chinese dances and cultural performances by local ethnic Chinese groups, cultural exhibits, arts and crafts, children’s activities, vendor booths and more.

Benefit Sol-stache celebrates solstice, facial hair

The fourth annual Winter Sol-Stache will take place Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. at Mekong Restaurant, 6004 W. Broad St. A fundraiser for prostate-cancer research, the event celebrates facial hair in addition to the winter solstice, and awards mug trophies for mustache categories that include the chevron, walrus, handlebar, horseshoe, Zappa, pencil, and the combination of English, Dali and Fu Manchu. The event will also include mustache-themed games such as "Pin the 'Stache on Selleck." Fake moustaches are also allowed to participate.

CandleLight Players’ Christmas Dessert Theater on Dec. 19

CounterACT Drama Ministries, in partnership with the James River Home School Foundation, will present the CandleLight Players’ Christmas Dessert Theater on Monday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Chamberlayne Baptist Church, 215 Wilkinson Rd. “Tangled in the Tinsel” is a collection of comedy sketches that covers every aspect of the holiday season. “The Journal” is a one-act mystery about two book store owners who find a mysterious journal during the Christmas rush.

West End Academy of Dance performs “The Nutcracker Sweet” Dec. 10-11

The West End Academy of Dance and Pilates, Dance and More have joined together to produce the much loved holiday classic, “The Nutcracker Sweet,” at 2 p.m. Dec. 10-11 at Deep Run High School, 4801 Twin Hickory Rd.

James River Parade of Lights scheduled for Dec. 10

The 19th annual James River Parade of Lights, a boat parade sponsored by the James River Advisory Council, will take place Saturday, Dec. 10. Boats decorated with thousands of lights will cruise the James between Richmond and Henrico and Chesterfield counties.

Surviving the holidays

One way to survive the holidays is to wallow in them. Embrace them. Absorb every sweet, sticky second of December. Forget the stress of bargain hunting, trying to find a parking place in Short Pump or baking your famous fruitcakes.

Instead, crank the car radio and sing along with the carols, slurp some eggnog and have a holly jolly time.
