Virginia Repertory Theatre will present “The Golden Goose” July 8 through Aug. 7 at The Children’s Theatre at Willow Lawn. This Brothers Grimm tale shows that nobility and kindness prevail even in the most sticky of situations. Our hero, Simpleton, triumphs over obstacle after obstacle to find the Golden Goose, and shows that even the meek among us have great things to offer. Length is one hour. Bifocals at CAT Theatre will hold auditions for the 2016-17 season at 10 a.m. on Aug. 22; noon on Aug. 23; and 2 p.m. on Aug. 24 at CAT Theatre, 319 North Wilkinson Road, Henrico.

Directors Una Harrison, Cindy Yuoconis, Michelle Black and H. Lynn Smith are looking for men and women 50 and older to fill a total of 21 roles in four one-act light-hearted plays. Actors can choose to prepare a one- to two-minute monologue and/or to read from the scripts. Actors are paid.

Bifocals at CAT Theatre, a troupe of senior actors, tours the greater Richmond area taking live theatre to senior centers where residents and participants might otherwise not have an opportunity to see live performances.

The touring schedule is:

• Revolt at Acorn Acres by Margie Langston, Jan. 16-Feb. 10
• The Odd’a Sea by Michelle Black, Mar. 13-Apr. 7

County plans Fourth of July event


Henrico County Recreation and Parks will present “Red, White, and Lights” at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park July 4.

Henrico County has hosted a Fourth of July celebration annually since 1981, but this year’s event will offer a later start time and expanded hours and be highlighted by new entertainment.

The free event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will feature the Richmond Symphony, a laser-light show, patriotic performances, and family activities. > Read more.

Tuckahoe YMCA to host Refugee Community Resource Fair


The Tuckahoe Family YMCA and ReEstablish Richmond will host the third-annual Refugee Community Resource Fair Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at the YMCA, 9211 Patterson Avenue in Henrico. The event is designed to provide refugees in the region information about jobs, local businesses, housing, health care, education and more.

As part of its strategic plan, the YMCA of Greater Richmond works to identify, address and eliminate economic, geographic and cultural barriers. > Read more.
