Lewis Ginter, Genworth to host ‘Genworth Free Community Day’ at the garden on Labor Day

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and Genworth will host Genworth Free Community Day at the garden on Labor Day, Sept. 5. All visitors will be admitted free between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Free admission includes music in the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. under the tent in front of Bloemendaal House by The Heavy Hitter DJ Lonnie B, hosted by Kelli Lemon, presenting a mix of contemporary hip hop and R&B. This will be one of the last chances to see the Nature Connects: Art with LEGO Bricks exhibit, which ends Sept. 18. Free admission also includes entrance to the Butterflies LIVE! exhibit and, for players of Pokemon Go, the Garden will be purchasing lures to increase the number of Pokemon at the Garden on Labor Day. The Garden is also partnering with the Lakeside Business Association as a collection site on this day for donations of school supplies benefiting Lakeside Elementary School. Henricus Historical Park invites home schooled children ages 4-14 to Home School Day

Henricus Historical Park invites home schooled children ages 4-14, parents and educators to the Henricus Home School Day – Early Colonial Virginia program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Divided by age level, the students will work on a variety of activities and curriculum, as well as receive hands-on experience with mapping skills and environmental activities deeply rooted in Virginia Indian and Colonial history. Free children’s clothing for those in need

The Children's Clothing Closet at Highland Springs United Methodist Church will be open Saturday, Aug. 27 and Tuesday, Aug. 30 to provide free new or nearly new children's clothing for families in need, prior to the start of the school year. County plans Fourth of July event


Henrico County Recreation and Parks will present “Red, White, and Lights” at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park July 4.

Henrico County has hosted a Fourth of July celebration annually since 1981, but this year’s event will offer a later start time and expanded hours and be highlighted by new entertainment.

The free event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will feature the Richmond Symphony, a laser-light show, patriotic performances, and family activities. > Read more.

Weekend Top 10


It’s a great weekend to get outside! The Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society is offering two events this weekend. Accompany the group to find and document native plants present and blooming in Echo Lake Park on Saturday or take a “Sunday Stroll” at Dorey Park to observe the seasonal changes taking place. Other outdoor events this weekend include the final summer concert at West Broad Village and “Fridays on the Patio” at James River Cellars Winery in Glen Allen.
