American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Richmond/Henrico planned May 2

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Richmond/Henrico will take place May 2 at Pocahontas Middle School, 12000 Three Chopt Rd. Relay is an all-day event that unites the community in a common effort to raise much needed funds for cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient services. The schedule includes Opening Ceremony at 12 p.m., Survivors Lap at 8 p.m., Caregivers Lap at 8:15 p.m., Luminaria Ceremony from 8:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Closing Ceremony at 11 p.m. There will be a canned food drive again this year; the cans will be used for the luminaria bags instead of sand. The MISS Foundation's Kindness Walk: Remembering Those We Love will start at 9 a.m. in the Innsbrook Picnic Area, 4222 Cox Rd. The Kindness Walk is an international memorial walk to remember all of the beloved children who are gone too soon, and to honor all of the mothers, fathers, families and communities by participating in Kindness Projects as a way to continue their child's legacy. Henrico’s most famous tree


Henrico's most famous tree, known as the Surrender Tree, still stood for more than a century near the intersection of Osborne Turnpike and New Market Road -- until June 2012.

It was in the shade of that tree on April 3, 1865, that Richmond mayor Joseph Mayo met Major Atherton Stevens and troops from the 4th Massachusetts Cavalry and handed over a note surrendering the city to Federal troops. Evacuation had already begun. > Read more.

ARC event raises $75k for ICDS program


The Greater Richmond ARC's annual Ladybug Wine Tasting and Silent Auction on April 11 netted $75,165 to benefit its Infant and Child Development Services (ICDS) program.

About 350 guests sampled fine West Coast wines and craft beer from Midnight Brewery at Richmond Raceway Complex's Torque Club, along with food from local eateries. Carytown Cupcakes provided dessert. > Read more.

‘Race to Protect Children’ scheduled for Saturday


The Race to Protect Children will be held at West Broad Village Saturday, May 2, to benefit Greater Richmond SCAN.

The 1-mile Kids Run will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. The event is designed to be family friendly, and the flat course is walker-friendly.
