Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and Genworth will host Genworth Free Community Day at the garden on Labor Day, Sept. 5. All visitors will be admitted free between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Free admission includes music in the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. under the tent in front of Bloemendaal House by The Heavy Hitter DJ Lonnie B, hosted by Kelli Lemon, presenting a mix of contemporary hip hop and R&B. This will be one of the last chances to see the Nature Connects: Art with LEGO Bricks exhibit, which ends Sept. 18. Free admission also includes entrance to the Butterflies LIVE! exhibit and, for players of Pokemon Go, the Garden will be purchasing lures to increase the number of Pokemon at the Garden on Labor Day. The Garden is also partnering with the Lakeside Business Association as a collection site on this day for donations of school supplies benefiting Lakeside Elementary School. Pianist Holly Bowling will perform at 8 p.m. at The Tin Pan, 8982 Quioccasin Rd. Bowling is a classically trained pianist devoted to the legendary rock band Phish. Having attended over 300 shows by the Burlington-based quartet, she became obsessed by their famous rendition of “Tweezer” from Lake Tahoe on July 31, 2013. It led Bowling to transcribe this 37-minute improvisational masterpiece note-for-note and arrange it for solo piano. That journey led to her debut album, “Distillation of a Dream: The Music of Phish Reimagined For Solo Piano,” a 2-CD set featuring 15 songs, three of which were transcribed from live renditions, including “Tweezer.” Tickets are $15. With a six-decade career and more than 200 albums, Nelson has earned countless awards as a musician and amassed credentials as an author, actor, and activist.
In the past five years alone, he has delivered 10 new album releases, released a Top 10 New York Times’ bestsellers book, headlined Farm Aid (an event he co-founded in 1985), received his fifth-degree black belt in Gong Kwon Yu Sul, headlined the last three years of the on-going Luck Reunion food and music festival at his ranch in Luck, Tex. during SXSW, announced the launch of his cannabis company (Willie’s Reserve) and appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
Rocker-turned-country singer Aaron Lewis will open the show as Nelson’s special guest. Lewis, the front man of the rock band Staind, will release his solo album Sinner the next day (Sept. 16). The first single off that album. “That Ain’t No Country,” is currently playing on country radio stations nationwide. The title track for the album is a duet with Nelson.
Henrico County Recreation and Parks will present “Red, White, and Lights” at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park July 4.
Henrico County has hosted a Fourth of July celebration annually since 1981, but this year’s event will offer a later start time and expanded hours and be highlighted by new entertainment.
