Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden will present Nature Connects: Art with LEGO Bricks May 27 to Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Created with half-a-million LEGO bricks, the award-winning exhibit by New York artist Sean Kenney will feature 27 sculptures in 14 displays throughout the Garden including a 60-pound bumblebee, dragonfly with a 3.5-foot wingspan and a seven-foot tall red rose. Document native plants at Echo Lake Park Aug. 27

The Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society will find and document native plants present and blooming at this time of year in Echo Lake Park on Saturday, Aug. 27. This free event is open to the public. The group will meet at 9 a.m. in the parking lot located at 5701 Springfield Rd., just off Staples Mill Road at I-295 in Glen Allen. The park is a wonderfully preserved example of a traditional passive recreational area from the 1930s transformed into a municipal park with a variety of dry, rolling, oak-hickory woods, sunny openings, trailside borders, fencerows, a near-pristine, shaded, trail-bordered shoreline, bushy thickets, and wetlands and long-time fishing lake. Participants are asked to wear sturdy shoes or boots, bring water and snacks, and insect and sun protection. A notepad to record plants observed, and standard pictorial ID guides are ideally suited for this event. Henrico County to host “Fight-the-Bite TODAY” at Fairfield MS

August 27 2016 - Live demos, educational materials, free insect repellent (while supplies last) and more, 8 a.m., Free
In an effort to prevent the potential spread of Zika virus, Henrico County is hosting "Fight-the-Bite TODAY," a free event designed to help citizens learn how to prevent mosquito bites and reduce Asian tiger mosquito populations, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fairfield Middle School, 5121 Nine Mile Road. Citizens are invited to stop by during the event to pick up free EPA-registered insect repellent, while supplies last. Educational materials and tools will be available, and various community partners and emergency preparedness agencies also will be present. Live demonstrations and Pick-a-Day to Fight-the-Bite interactive sessions will provide residents the resources to prevent mosquito bites. Free children’s clothing for those in need

The Children's Clothing Closet at Highland Springs United Methodist Church will be open Saturday, Aug. 27 and Tuesday, Aug. 30 to provide free new or nearly new children's clothing for families in need, prior to the start of the school year. County plans Fourth of July event


Henrico County Recreation and Parks will present “Red, White, and Lights” at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park July 4.

Henrico County has hosted a Fourth of July celebration annually since 1981, but this year’s event will offer a later start time and expanded hours and be highlighted by new entertainment.

Accompany the group to find and document native plants present and blooming in Echo Lake Park on Saturday or take a “Sunday Stroll” at Dorey Park to observe the seasonal changes taking place. Other outdoor events this weekend include the final summer concert at West Broad Village and “Fridays on the Patio” at James River Cellars Winery in Glen Allen.
