Liver transplant patients may require in excess of 30 pints of blood during surgery. You could have been cruisin’ down Mountain Road in a new Dodge Charger, or riding a new skateboard to Mr. Allen’s Market. That was the year – 1965 – that the world was introduced to contact lenses, Spirograph, Bounty, Get Smart, Lost in Space, Gatorade, Apple Jacks, and Spaghetti O’s.
It was also in 1965 that the Glen Allen Ruritan Club was founded – and today the Ruritans are still going strong. The Ruritans are the folks that have cleaned up Mountain Road; raised money for scholarships at local high schools through the Healy Gala; supported local schools and charities such as Lamb’s Basket, St. Joseph Villa, the Henrico Christmas Mother and the juvenile jail by cooking their locally famous barbeque; and put on Glen Allen Day for the last 19
