Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center to host annual spaghetti dinner, concert

The Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center will host its annual Spaghetti Dinner and Benefit Concert from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Temple, 4204 Hermitage Rd. Meal includes hearty spaghetti and meat sauce, fresh salad, bakery bread, homemade dessert and choice of beverage. Country/gospel music provided by the Barker Family Band. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. Proceeds benefit the SRCLC, a nonprofit speech and hearing clinic for children with communication disorders. Virginia Home for Boys & Girls Youth Triathlon planned Aug. 20

The Virginia Home for Boys & Girls Youth Triathlon will take place Aug. 20 at VHBG, 8716 W. Broad St. Registration opens at 6:30 a.m. with the first wave (for ages 5-9) kicking off at 8 a.m. Family Fun Day activities start at 9 a.m. and include pool, bounce house, dunk tank, DJ/karaoke, bubble soccer and food trucks. An optional four-day Youth Triathlon Camp will be held Monday, Aug. 15 to Thursday, Aug. 18. All proceeds benefit the children at VHBG. Race fee donation includes race, t-shirt and post-race snacks. Sandston Founders Club honors Sydnor


The Founders Club of Sandston presented lifetime membership to Charles W. Sydnor at its 12th annual meeting last month.

Sydnor, who grew up in Sandston and later served as president of Emory and Henry College for eight years, was honored by Founder Club President Alice Taylor Baldwin at the April 23 event at Sandston Memorial Recreation Center. > Read more.

Walking MADD


Mothers Against Drunk Driving will present its annual Walk Like MADD 5k Dash/Walk on Apr. 16 at Dorey Park, 2999 Darbytown Road. Check-in starts at 8 a.m. with the walk beginning at 9 a.m. Walk Like MADD honors those killed or injured in impaired driving crashes. CAT’s 53rd season opens with new directors


The Chamberlayne Actors Theatre recently announced its director picks for the upcoming 2016-2017 season. Three of the four directors chosen will be working with CAT for the first time.

Steven W. Ryan will be making his first professional directorial debut with his production of “I’ll Be Back Before Midnight” (Oct. 14-29). Ryan has been a locally known actor since the late 1990s.

Zachary Owen will direct “Wishing Well” (Jan. 20-Feb. 4, 2017). Owen is currently assistant director and head of sound for CAT’s summer offering, “Don’t Cry For Me Margaret Mitchell.” > Read more.
