Fairfield Library will host the Teen Food Challenge from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Be a member of a team whose challenge is to develop a recipe and prepare the dish within 40 minutes – with ingredients only revealed at the competition. All teams will make a presentation to a judging panel (librarians), explaining the preparation steps, serving size, food safety concerns, nutrition value and cost of the dish. Henricus Historical Park to offer James River Camp for ages 9-12 Aug. 15-17

Henricus Historical Park will offer James River Camp for children aged 9-12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 15-17. Campers will explore the environmental features of the historic James River as 17th-century Virginia Indians and the Colonial settlers would have encountered it. Paddle a kayak and identify how the plants and animals of the river were hunted, gathered and used throughout history. Understand the course changes made at Dutch Gap during the Civil War and see how it is used today. Registration is required by Aug. 11 by calling 318-8797.

Crossover Healthcare Ministry, 8600 Quioccasin Rd., will host a free Back 2 School Community Immunity Clinic from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 18 and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 19. The clinic is open to children up to 18 years old who are uninsured or who have Medicaid/FAMIS and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. There will be vaccinations, school and sports physicals, and dental and vision screenings. Vaccinations are available only to children without insurance. Make sure to bring your child’s vaccine record and school physical form.

Sixth annual Youth Triathlon planned at Va. Home for Boys and Girls

The sixth annual Youth Triathlon, presented by Endorphin Fitness, will take place at 8 a.m. at the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls, 8716 West Broad St. The race is open to ages 5-14 and features a short pool swim, loop bike course closed to vehicular traffic, and a run on level playing fields. An optional four-day youth triathlon camp will precede the event, taking place Aug. 14-17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Participants will be taught essential skills of the sport in a safe, fun environment. Cost of the camp is $95. All proceeds from the event will benefit the children at VHBG.
