Henrico Police Athletic League (PAL) will hold its eighth-annual awards banquet March 30 at Glen Allen H.S. The event, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is open to the public and will include recognition of individuals and organizations responsible for Henrico PAL’s 10 years of success in the community. Keynote speaker for the event is the new University of Richmond Spiders Head Football Coach Russ Huseman. National PAL Executive Director Joseph Persichini and former Henrico PAL and 2011 National PAL Youth of the Year winner Aubrey Temple are also scheduled to speak. Extension, Master Gardeners to host ‘Perennial Flower Garden’ workshop at Deep Run Rec

The Henrico County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Henrico Master Gardeners will present a series of free workshops this spring to help residents care for their lawns and gardens. The third workshop, “Planning and Planting the Perennial Flower Garden,” will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Deep Run Recreation Center. The session will focus on laying out a garden, selecting plants and seeds, and strategies for growing flowers that return each spring with little maintenance. To register, call 501-5160.

Ceremony, walk planned in observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week

In observance of National Crime Victims' Rights Week (April 2-8), and to honor victims of crime in Henrico County and raise awareness about crime victims' rights and issues, Henrico County Victim/Witness will hold a commemorative ceremony and informative walk at 3 p.m. in the Henrico County Police Memorial Garden at 4301 E. Parham Rd. The event will include remarks from Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas, Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor, and Lt. Col. Clarence Hunter, Jr., Henrico Division of Police. Villa’s Flagler Housing wins national NAEH award


St. Joseph's Villa’s Flagler Housing & Homeless Services was one of three entities to earn the National Alliance to End Homelessness' Champion of Change Award. The awards were presented Nov. 17 during a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

NAEH annually recognizes proven programs and significant achievements in ending child and family homelessness.

Flagler completed its transition from an on-campus shelter to the community-based model of rapid rehousing in 2013, and it was one of the nation's first rapid re-housing service providers to be certified by NAEH. > Read more.

RIR’s Christmas tree lighting rescheduled for Dec. 12


Richmond International Raceway's 13th annual Community Christmas tree lighting has been rescheduled from Dec. 6 to Monday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m., due to inclement weather expected on the original date.

Entertainment Dec. 12 will be provided by the Laburnum Elementary School choir and the Henrico High School Mighty Marching Warriors band. Tree decorations crafted by students from Laburnum Elementary School and L. Douglas Wilder Middle School will be on display. Hot chocolate and cookies will be supplied by the Henrico High School football boosters. > Read more.
