Agencies combine on new entry point to Chickahominy


Canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts soon will have a new access point to the Chickahominy River. VDOT, the James River Association and Henrico County Parks and Recreation are teaming up to establish a new site in Eastern Henrico.

The James River Association negotiated the deal with VDOT to procure official access to the area located just east of I-295 on North Airport Road in Sandston. The site includes a park-and-ride commuter lot bordering the Chickahominy River and has been an unofficial launch site used by paddlers for years. > Read more.

Western Henrico Rotary installs new officers


The Western Henrico Rotary Club installed its new officers and directors for the 2014-15 year at its June 30 meeting.

The new officers are: Stuart P. Myers – president; Lee Muckey – president-elect; John Strotmeyer – vice president; Johnny Alga – secretary; Doug Westmoreland – treasurer; and Bill Sossong – sergeant-at-arms. The directors are: Adam Cherry (immediate past president), Michael Binns, Jim Brooks, Ryan Davis, Bob Glasser, Clint Ray, Ken Strickler, Darren Waggoner and Doug Westmoreland. Rotary International District 7600 Area Governor Jeff Hawkins visited the club at its meeting at the Westwood Club to install the new slate of leaders. > Read more.

Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association to salute military members June 7

The Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association (GAYAA) will honor members of the military as part of an event at Glen Allen Stadium at RF&P Park in Glen Allen on Saturday, June 7 at 12:30 p.m.

Association officials will present a check to the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program (VWWP) during the event. The GAYAA raised money by selling special camouflage hats and t-shirts to benefit the area’s wounded veterans and support VWWP’s ongoing efforts. > Read more.

‘Dragon’ sequel is a rare part-two success story
Sequels are like toys. Any sequel worth its salt needs more stuff – more “cool,” more “new,” more of everything, really.
