Steward School, SMV to host world-record-setting aviator

Aviator Barrington Irving, who set a world record as the first African American and youngest person to fly around the world solo, will visit the Science Museum of Virginia at 4 p.m. to share his tale of inspiration with area students and families. The program will be followed by a meet-and-greet experience as Irving explores the museum's Speed exhibition with event attendees. The event is free and open to the public, and is partially made possible through support for The Steward School from the Edward E. Ford Foundation, Robins Foundation, and Luck Companies Foundation. Henricus Historical Park to host Home School Day

Home school students from across the region are invited to experience how economics, tobacco, and trade helped colonize the New World during Henricus Home School Day at Henricus Historical Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students will be divided by age for appropriate hands-on activities and curriculum and take on trade and agriculture activities focused on exploring how they helped shape the 17th century. JSRCC to host author Kristen Green at an “Around the World Through Books” discussion

Reynolds Community College will host author Kristen Green at an “Around the World Through Books” discussion from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Lipman Auditorium of the Massey Library and Technology Center on the Parham Road Campus. The discussion will feature Greens’ novel “Something must be done about Prince Edward County,” which tells the story of a Virginia community that defied the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Henrico Schools to hold hiring event for teachers, other professionals at Glen Allen HS

Henrico County Public Schools will hold a major hiring event to talk with interested teachers and other professionals about opportunities within Virginia’s sixth-largest school division. Henrico Schools is seeking teachers for all content areas for the 2017-18 school year, as well as school counselors, librarians, psychologists, social workers and nurses. JR Tucker High School Drama Boosters to host “Race to the End” Color Run

The J.R. Tucker High School Drama Boosters will host the “Race to the End” Color Run from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the school, 2910 N. Parham Rd. Participants of the event will be rewarded with post-race events on campus including vendors, concessions and kid activities. Race registration includes bib, color packet and t-shirt (guaranteed to participants that register by May 4). Cost is $25 for students, $35 for adults and $30 for groups of five or more. Villa’s Flagler Housing wins national NAEH award


St. Joseph's Villa’s Flagler Housing & Homeless Services was one of three entities to earn the National Alliance to End Homelessness' Champion of Change Award. The awards were presented Nov. 17 during a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

NAEH annually recognizes proven programs and significant achievements in ending child and family homelessness.

Flagler completed its transition from an on-campus shelter to the community-based model of rapid rehousing in 2013, and it was one of the nation's first rapid re-housing service providers to be certified by NAEH. > Read more.

RIR’s Christmas tree lighting rescheduled for Dec. 12


Richmond International Raceway's 13th annual Community Christmas tree lighting has been rescheduled from Dec. 6 to Monday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m., due to inclement weather expected on the original date.

Entertainment Dec. 12 will be provided by the Laburnum Elementary School choir and the Henrico High School Mighty Marching Warriors band. Tree decorations crafted by students from Laburnum Elementary School and L. Douglas Wilder Middle School will be on display. Hot chocolate and cookies will be supplied by the Henrico High School football boosters. > Read more.
