Cultural Arts Center offers art experiences for PAL participants
Citizen Staff Reports 02/25/13
The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen and Henrico Police Athletic League now are offering children who participate in PAL the opportunity to receive free art experiences through the Art Matters program.
Henrico PAL reaches more than 1,500 at-risk children and teens between the ages of 6 and 18 each year through educational, athletic and social programs while creating a positive relationship between police officers and youth. Through Art Matters, the CACGA and PAL are working together to expand PAL programming to include art, music and theatre classes and summer camps.
Art Matters began with a modest budget last spring, offering free Center Season tickets to the performance of Mark Nizer 3-D Juggling Show. During the summer, 300 students also enjoyed a special interactive concert performed by local singer Desiree Roots and the Make Music with Me Band. The children learned about patterns and rhythms, the evolution of music from blues and jazz to hip hop, and how songs are written.
The center began offering free art classes and activities this month during PAL’s after-school program at Harvie and Ridge Elementary Schools for elementary and middle school students. Sixty-eight students are participating in the 18-week arts enrichment program. Students will participate in hands-on art and craft projects while learning about culture, history and important art movements. At the end of each art lesson, students will have a completed project, from origami creations to mosaic arts, to take home.
Art Matters receives support from the Dominion Foundation, Markel Corporation, Richmond Unite, Target Foundation and Wells Fargo Foundation. To make a financial donation or to donate supplies, visit http://www.artsglenallen.com/facility-info/annual-fund.php
