Henrico native’s film chosen as festival’s semi-finalist

Henrico native John Irwin’s film “Sold” has been chosen as a semi-finalist for Ridley Scott’s Your Film Festival. “Sold” was selected out of more than 15,000 submissions and if voted into the top 10, will open the Venice International Film Festival.

“Sold” is about a young journalist who is inadvertently captured into a human trafficking ring while investigating the treatment of undocumented immigrants in America.

Ridley Scott’s Your Film Festival shows how Scott Free Productions has been able to use YouTube to gain more exposure for filmmakers. The winner of the competition will be awarded $500,000 to make the film a reality with Ridley Scott, a noted film director and producer.

The READ Center will hold a Volunteer Orientation from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Center's mission is to help adults with low-level literacy develop reading and communication skills so they can fulfill their roles as citizens, workers and family members, and improve their quality of life. The Center provides classes and one-to-one tutoring and there is an ongoing need for volunteers willing to tutor students in reading, writing, basic math and digital skills.
