Surviving the holidays

One way to survive the holidays is to wallow in them. Embrace them. Absorb every sweet, sticky second of December.

Forget the stress of bargain hunting, trying to find a parking place in Short Pump or baking your famous fruitcakes.

Instead, crank the car radio and sing along with the carols, slurp some eggnog and have a holly jolly time.

For a few more tips for happy holidays, check out Henrico Theatre Company’s production, “A Christmas Survival Guide.”

The musical revue runs Dec. 2-18 at the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen.

“It allows us to laugh at ourselves and the chaos of the holidays while reminding us of what’s important about the season,” said director Robin Arthur, who says she’s had a blast with the cast and crew of the show.

“I can’t imagine anyone coming to see the show who will not leave up and excited and renewed and joyous about the holiday season.”

Armed with a copy of the book, “A Christmas Survival Guide” and a cheery attitude, the characters learn to cope with the season in ways that are both hilarious and heartwarming.

The cast includes Kyle Billeter, Tara Callahan, Jenny Fralin, Fernando Rivadeneira and Brian Vaughan. Musical director is J. David, with Lin Heath serving as set designer, Matthew Landwehr as lighting designer and Thomas W. Hammond as costume designer.

Expect a lot of splashy musical numbers, with familiar songs and some new ones. “There is a lot of huge sound,” said Arthur. “We have 28 sound cues in one song alone.

“It’s such a good time, a fun show. I’ve been in the holiday spirit since Halloween.”

Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for senior adults and students. Reservations are suggested; call 501-5859.
