A triumphant return

Explaining the nuts and bolts of Pixar’s new, exciting, innovative Inside Out – really digging into the film’s shape-and-color explanation of the human mind – would take up the entirety of this review. And probably three or four more (if movies had instruction manuals, Inside Out’s would be the size and general poundage of a cinder block).

It’s a complicated movie. So here’s the gist, in as simply-put terms can be.

CAT Theatre’s ‘Now Then Again’ begins March 20

Now Then Again, CAT Theatre’s submission to the Acts of Faith “Fringe” Festival, will run March 20 through April 4. There will be a talkback session following the March 29 matinee performance. Now Then Again was written by Virginia native Penny Penniston, an alumnus of St. Catherine's School.

The play tells the story of Ginny and Henry, who find love and a future together in spite of obstacles like his neuroses, her husband and a full disbelief in destiny, while working together at the Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory.

"From the moment I read Now Then Again, I was immediately drawn to this modern love story that looped together the theories of Heisenberg and Schrödinger with a predestined ending that was completely dependent upon coffee being spilt underneath a burnt out lightbulb," said Director Melissa Rayford.}

A surprise champion

McFarland, USA is a Disney sports movie, and like any Disney sports movie, there are a few rules it has to follow.

First, it must star a Hollywood actor whose popularity is slightly on the wane (Kevin Costner – check).

Then it must follow a surprising-yet-true story about underdogs who win big (a high school cross-country team from one of the most destitute areas in the country becoming the state champs? Check).

And, there have to be life lessons all around – not just for the young men who learn the importance and discipline of sports, but for our slightly past-his-expiration-date hero, who goes from a grouch to a loving father figure. Check, check, check.}

CACGA to celebrate 16th anniversary March 14

The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen will celebrate its 16th anniversary Saturday, March 14 at 6 p.m. with “A Date with Frank & Marilyn,” an evening of fun and entertainment designed to raise funds for the center's three outreach programs – Art Matters, Artful Living and Creative Family Studio. A performance by a duo impersonating Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe will highlight the evening.

The evening will include an artist live and silent auction with a variety of unique and hard-to-come-by prize packages including two tickets to the 2016 Masters golf tournament, a trip for two to Napa Valley, dinner for 10 by celebrity chef Patrick Evan-Hylton served at CACGA's gardens, followed by opening night tickets to The Capital Steps and 10 individual date-night packages around Metro Richmond.}
