Theater celebrates 20th anniversary


Henrico's HATTheatre likely wouldn't have survived its first two decades without a little luck – and a lot of faith.

So, naturally, to celebrate its 20th anniversary, the theater is hosting a performance that questions faith.

Over the Tavern opened March 8, with additional performances scheduled March 15-17. The show is part of the Acts of Faith Festival, an initiative of Richmond's Second Presbyterian Church, faith communities and theater groups designed to spotlight various religious themes.}

University of Richmond’s 2013 Tucker-Boatwright film festival begins March 1

The University of Richmond’s 2013 Tucker-Boatwright Festival of Film will begin with a three-day festival, “Latin America in the Movies,” March 1–3. All films will be shown at Queally Hall, Ukrop Auditorium.

Sixteen award-winning films, features and documentaries from and about Latin America will be presented by experts and filmmakers. Topics include: the American wars of independence, memory, labor and the environment, liberation theology, political activism, family and adopted children from regions at war, and trials against the paramilitary.}

A Toast to pub fare

Toast’s billing as a gastropub intrigued me almost as much as its “New American” menu, so I enjoyed reading up on the expression’s origins. As it turns out, some pub owners in London coined the term in 1991, as part of an effort to introduce more refinement to the menu. It wasn’t long before the British restaurant-pub hybrids caught on in the States, spawning a new genre and even a spin-off: the gastrolounge, which emphasizes wine and spirits over beer selection.}
