The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Henrico Police are both presenting community events tomorrow, Aug. 1. The Feria Community Resource Fair at Richmond International Raceway brings together community service providers, embassies/consulates from Latin American countries, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and corporations that impact the Latino community. The Division of Police’s Community Day will feature demonstrations and displays from police, fire, animal protection and sheriff’s office, as well as family activities, food, entertainment and more. Other events this weekend include wine, chess and theatre! For all our top picks this weekend, click here!
Already a fan of Boka fare from outdoor events with the Tako Truck, I was delighted to learn of the new restaurant, and eager to see if its reputation held up after putting down brick-and-mortar roots.
Would the food lose its zest if I wasn’t enjoying it in the great outdoors? Would it seem pedestrian served from an ordinary kitchen instead of a truck?
Would the tacos be less satisfying as an antidote to normal lunch hunger – instead of being ingested to stave off desperate hunger after a long afternoon of crowds, sun, and tedious lines?}

A Lakeside home-brewing shop has felt the gravitational pull toward the booming craft beer scene.
Original Gravity, a shop that sells beer and wine kits for homebrewers, has just been given the green light to start work on a microbrewery.
Owner Tony Ammendolia is expanding his 1,000-square-foot shop in Lakeside Town Center to 5,000-square-foot digs a few doors down to add a brewery and expand his supplies.
Ammendolia opened the home-brew supply store in November 2011 and since then he said business has taken off.
“I think I outgrew this place in the first year,” Ammendolia said. “We’ve seen steady growth and I’ve been looking for a place to expand to move the shop to get more square footage.”}

Temperatures are getting cooler and this weekend is a great time to spend outdoors! Relive the Battle of New Market Heights as the County of Henrico commemorates the 150th anniversary Sept. 27-28. Get a little exercise while supporting a good cause at the Short Pump Mile & Express Run and Walk Now for Autism Speaks. Or “Party on the Avenues” at a unique street festival at the Libbie/Grove/Patterson corridor. For all our top picks this weekend, click here!}
Dolphin Tale 2 is not a complicated film. Far from it – the story can be summed up in just three short words: “Aquarium seeks dolphin.”
A little elaboration wouldn’t hurt, though.
The sequel to 2011’s Dolphin Tale (about the real-life dolphin, Winter, who lost her tail in a crab trap and learned to swim with a prosthesis), Dolphin Tale 2 follows the same cheerily blended family in the same marine hospital/aquarium we saw them in last time. Only, one of their dolphins (not Winter, don’t worry) succumbs to old age, leaving a hole in this sea-life-inclusive Brady Bunch.
Losing a dolphin is a big deal – in captivity, it’s required that they live in pairs.}

Tim Laxton rises at 4:30 a.m. every day for a biscuit. But he’s not rushing out to any restaurant to get his favorite Southern comfort food; he’s baking his own from scratch and serving them up from his bakery on Lakeside Avenue.
Laxton opened Early Bird Biscuit Co. & Bakery in early July and since then biscuits have been flying out of there.
The self-taught baker draws hungry crowds in with a biscuit of the day like the Old Bay Cheddar, but the buttermilk biscuits are the staple.
“On a Saturday I generally make about 400 biscuits with my two hands,” Laxton said. “I’m constantly making biscuits all day long.”}
