Weekend Top 10

It’s a great weekend to get outside! The Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society is offering two events this weekend. Accompany the group to find and document native plants present and blooming in Echo Lake Park on Saturday or take a “Sunday Stroll” at Dorey Park to observe the seasonal changes taking place. Other outdoor events this weekend include the final summer concert at West Broad Village and “Fridays on the Patio” at James River Cellars Winery in Glen Allen. If you’re going to be outside, don’t forget the insect repellent! To learn more about avoiding those pesky mosquitos, check out Henrico County’s “Fight-the-Bite TODAY” event tomorrow. Have people in the United States even heard of Shaun the Sheep? I certainly hadn’t.

I walked into Shaun the Sheep Movie knowing precisely two things about the film: one, it’s the product of Aardman Animations, the stop-motion animation studio responsible for Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run. And two, it’s got a cartoon sheep in it. That’s it.

But walking out, I was a total Shaun the Sheep convert – blown away by Shaun the Sheep Movie’s unassuming, good-natured, sheepy charms. (Also, it turns out Shaun the Sheep – originally a TV series – used to air on the Disney Channel. Maybe I’m just out of the loop).

The second-best movie, of 2

I’ve never been to India. I’m pretty sure The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel knows that, somehow. And I’m pretty sure that’s the point. You pop in the DVD and stroll the streets of Jaipur with a group of elderly, exceedingly likable Brits. Then you pop the DVD out, feeling amused and mildly enriched. The end.

There’s not a whole lot going on in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, released on DVD on July 14. Again, I think that’s probably the point.

Just like the first Best Exotic Marigold, the film follows a group of sun-crinkled English ex-pats living in India’s quirkiest retirement community.
