A gift that should stop giving

Was anyone asking for an extra-large helping of Larry the Cable Guy this Christmas? If so, you can thank Santa Claus for Jingle All the Way 2.

If not, you can be like the rest of us and curse Santa for his folly in creating such a film. Santa, we neither wanted nor needed this.

A follow-up to the much-derided 1996 Christmas film Jingle All the Way, Jingle All the Way 2 isn’t so much a sequel as it is an odd kind of remake, offering a few original twists on the original’s dad-vs-dad holiday showdown, but also copying large chunks of the original without alteration.

Back to the future

Baby boomers may feel a curious pull towards Mr. Peabody & Sherman. If a childhood was spent parked in front of the TV, watching a dog genius and his boy companion travel through time, one might be interested to see what modern times have done to Messrs. Peabody and Sherman.

The result is not flattering. No longer is cartoondom’s foremost super-intelligent, time-traveling beagle content with dry wit and the occasional history pun. No, the Peabody of today is “cool,” in that half-baked way that can only come from someone who’s trying way too hard to be cool. This Peabody is a master of slow-motion kung fu. He tears up a guitar better than Hendrix. He Zumbas.}

CAT Theatre to present Enchanted April again

CAT Theatre will present Enchanted April March 21 through April 5. As part of the theater's 50th anniversary this year, patrons selected Enchanted April (originally performed in 2007) as the CAT performance that they would most like to see repeated.

Enchanted April was written by Elizabeth von Arnim, and the novel was adapted to the stage by Kane Campbell. The 1991 film version featured Miranda Richardson, Alfred Molina and Joan Plowright.}

The Band Perry, Darius Rucker coming to RIR Amphitheater in July

The Band Pery, fronted by Kimberly Perry and rounded out by her younger brothers, Neil and Reid, has achieved much acclaim since the release of its self-titled debut album in October 2010. Pioneer, the band’s sophomore album, was released in April 2013 and has helped to secure the band a string of hit singles including "Better Dig Two,” “Done” and the current single, “Chainsaw”, which was released to country radio in March 2014.}
