Founded as the Richmond Male Orphan Society in 1846, Virginia Home for Boys and Girls now operates as a comprehensive child and family services agency.
It is said that on the day after Thanksgiving in 1845 a young homeless boy came begging for food at the doorstep of the asylum run by the Female Humane Association, one of Richmond’s few orphanages. Frustrated that the asylum only served homeless girls, the director encouraged her husband and other men in the community to consider establishing and orphan society for destitute boys. By May of 1846, the first board meeting for the Richmond Male Orphan Society took place, followed thereafter by a charter from the Virginia General Assembly making them officially open for business.
From the moment that first little boy appeared in Richmond in 1845 until today, VHBG has provided care for Virginia’s children. And although that original charter provided a safe place for boys to receive care, become educated and learn a trade, it didn’t provide the family those boys needed. Fast forward to the middle of the 20th century when Virginia Home for Boys, as it had come to be known, moved to our current location, a rural 55 acre sanctuary in western Henrico County. The Hazlegrove family took over the reins and created something very special, a home and a family for boys.
They were Mom and Pop to hundreds of boys who still think of them as parents, and who still think of the boys they lived with as family. They come together to this day in support of each other and of VHBG, hoping to give the gift of long, enduring connection with people who care about them to children in need today. With the addition of girls to our campus in 2003, VHBG could truly say that we are here to serve all children in Virginia.
We have been around for generations, and we’ll be here for generations to come.

The first Firebirds Wood Fired Grill opened at the turn of the millennium in Charlotte, N.C. Today, the company operates restaurants across the United States. Firebirds Wood Fired Grill was named one of ten 2014 ‘Breakout Brands’ by Nation’s Restaurant News and received a 2014 Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor.
Firebirds offers a full-spectrum dining experience enhanced with local flavor.
Whatever the occasion, Firebirds makes it memorable with its classic American cuisine infused with bold flavors, fresh herbs and spices. Complementing hand-cut steaks, seafood and signature specialty dishes are hearty pastas, entrée salads, fire-grilled burgers and desserts.
Most restaurants treat kids’ fare as an afterthought. Firebirds prepares each dish to order, using the highest-quality ingredients. By partnering with the National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell program, it has designed a kids menu to help parents make healthy choices for their children when dining out.
Attention to detail is noticeable in Firebirds' chilled salad plates and the balanced notes of the cilantro-lime vinaigrette, in the way servers refold a guest’s napkin or refresh their martini glass and offer extra-long sharing forks with dessert.
Many of the touches are subtle. Their impact is unmistakable.
