Companion Extraordinaire to honor veterans May 14

Companion Extraordinaire Home Care and Skilled Services will be honoring veterans and current military members May 14 at 11 a.m. The event will take place at 5311 Lakeside Avenue.

Companion Extraordinaire dedicated a hall in its new Lakeside office as a “Wall of Honor” and will be presenting 13 military service men and women with certificates as well as placing their service photos on the wall.

Farmers’ Market donates to Breast Center

The Lakeside Farmers' Market donated 41 crocheted and knitted hats, three shawls and two lap robes to the Bon Secours Women's Breast Center in October for "Breast Cancer Awareness Month." The items were made by the market's vendors and customers, including the 11-year-old girl pictured.}

Lakeside to host ‘Holly Jolly Christmas’


Nearly three dozen Lakeside Avenue merchants will host the eighth annual Holly Jolly Christmas event Nov. 9-10, providing local shoppers with a signature kick-off event. Shoppers will be able to take free trolley rides to and from shops along the avenue from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10. Participating shops will stay open late, and many will offer special deals for holiday shoppers. All participating businesses also will have special containers to collect donations for the Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad, the event's beneficiary.}

‘Cookies for Kids’ cancer bake sales planned Saturday

The third annual Cookies for Kids Cancer Bake Sale will take place Saturday, Sept. 8 throughout the Richmond region, including a number of spots in Henrico County.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the national nonprofit founded by Richmond native Gretchen Holt Witt that supports research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancers. Through local bake sales, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer provides the inspiration and support for individuals, communities and businesses to help fight pediatric cancer together.}

Antique cars coming to Lakeside

The Richmond Region Antique Automobile Club of America will host its 2012 Reliability Tour with stops throughout the region – including one in Lakeside – at the end of this month.

The club is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and its tour, Aug. 27-31, will feature antique automobiles built in 1915 and years prior. It will stop Aug. 28 at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.}

Lakeside Farmers’ Market named top market in US

Lakeside Farmers’ Market has been named one of the top farmer’s markets in America by Rodale, Inc. The editors of Rodale polled the managers of the most popular farmers’ markets in the country, according to the American Farmland Trust’s most recent annual awards, to get the best insider tips on making market shopping easier and sometimes cheaper.

The Lakeside Farmers’ Market was selected for its wide array of juicy, in-season produce, including its claim to fame – fresh eggs.}

Lewis Ginter offering free admission July 4

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is again offering free admission July 4 as part of its All-American Celebration. Now in its third year, past history has seen an especially diverse group of visitors on this day with attendance ranging from 3,000-5,000 guests.

Guests on the fourth will be able to visit the garden’s Butterflies Live exhibit and participate in children’s activities. The Happy Lucky Combo will perform live music from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Children’s Garden. At 2 p.m. guests are invited to decorate themselves, strollers and wagons in red, white and blue and parade around the Children’s Garden.}

Art ‘ReFined’ in Lakeside

Local artist Kris Taylor (above) was among the visitors at a March 31 open house held at the relocated women's consignment shop ReFinery, formerly of the Bellevue area and now in Lakeside. Among the artist's oil paintings and framed etchings now on display at the shop is this favorite, "Second Sighting of the Sacred White Cow," which was inspired by a field full of cows that Taylor spotted while driving through the Colorado countryside near Ute Mountain. Taylor's work will be on display through May at ReFinery, located at 5402 Lakeside Avenue.}
