Holman student named Miss Va. Coed Junior Teen


Holman Middle School student Victoria Nguyen recently was named Miss Virginia American Coed Junior Teen after competing in the Miss Virginia American Coed pageant in Williamsburg. She was the youngest competitor in her division. Nguyen now will advance to represent Virginia at the 2015 Miss American Junior Teen Pageant at Walt Disney World in Florida in November.

Baseball game to benefit Glen Allen Buddy Ball


For the fifth consecutive year, St. Christopher’s and Benedictine will play a varsity baseball game at Glen Allen's RF&P Park as part of a fundraising effort for the River City Buddy Ball program.

The game will take place Saturday, April 12, at 7 p.m., and the teams hope to raise $3,000 through donations, raffles and other efforts. Admission to the game is free, but fans who attend are asked to donate funds for the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association's Buddy Ball program, which enables disabled children and teens to play baseball.}

Squirrels, RIR to host golf tournament in Henrico

The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Richmond International Raceway are teaming to host the inaugural Turn Left Golf Classic at The Dominion Club in Wyndham June 2. The charity golf event strengthens the partnership between the organizations and will equally benefit the charity arms of both, Richmond International Raceway Cares and Flying Squirrels Charities.

The event was named because the common denominator between the two organizations is competitors turning left during competition. (Drivers turn left at “America’s Premier Short Track,” and base runners turn left as they round the bases at The Diamond.)}

Holiday glow

Curator Yvonne Hopkins presents a bounty of Christmas trees as part of The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen’s annual “Illumina,” a holiday decorated tree display. Hopkins and the center unveiled the trees Dec. 2; they will remain on display through Jan. 3. Each features its own unique theme – from trains to Musicology 101. Admission is free. The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen is located at 2880 Mountain Road.}

‘Lady’s Fashion Show’ at Meadow Farm

Meadow Farm hosted its "Lady's Fashion Show" June 1, showcasing the fashions of seven generations of Meadow Farm women – including four generations of Sheppard women who lived there between 1810 and 1920.}

Raiders help ‘Stir It Up!’

Among the activities featured at Stir It Up!, a fundraiser and awareness raiser held May 5 at Deep Run H.S., was the opportunity for youngsters – including this young fan pictured with player Raibonne Charles – to play catch with members of the Richmond Raiders professional indoor football team.}

Indian flair

Children perform during the India Spring Fest, held April 27-28 at the Hindu Center in Glen Allen. The event featured traditional Indian food, shopping and entertainment for children and adults.}

DRMD hopes to hit million-dollar mark

Deep Run High School’s 2013 Marathon Dance, a student-run function that aims to raise money for organizations around the community, will be held March 15-16 in the school’s gymnasium. In its seven-year history, the dance has raised more than $863,000, and this year the students’ goal is to break the $1 million mark. The event has progressed from a small dance in the high school gym to an event that brings the entire community together. }

Black History Month celebration scheduled for Feb. 10 in Glen Allen

Henrico County will celebrate Black History Month with an afternoon of musical reflection, portrayals and historical interpretation beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10 in the auditorium at The Academy at Virginia Randolph, 2204 Mountain Rd. in Glen Allen. Admission is free.

This program aims to highlight two anniversaries in the history of African Americans and the United States: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington. Opening the event will be musical selections offered by One Voice Chorus, a diverse community singing group. }
