Dr. Even Alexander, a New York Times best-selling author who has been featured on Oprah and Dr. Oz, was in town last week to promote his June 27 talk, "Proof of Heaven," at Glen Allen High School.
Alexander (pictured, at right, while Unity of Bon Air church member Harry Simmons interviews him) has written about what he considers to be his journey through the afterlife.
Tickets to this month's event are $25 and will support the new Bon Secours Hospice House being built later this year.
The third annual Cookies for Kids Cancer Bake Sale will take place Saturday, Sept. 8 throughout the Richmond region, including a number of spots in Henrico County.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit the national nonprofit founded by Richmond native Gretchen Holt Witt that supports research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancers. Through local bake sales, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer provides the inspiration and support for individuals, communities and businesses to help fight pediatric cancer together.}

Students enrolled in Rolfe, Fairfield and Elko Middle Schools are invited to participate in the Lions International Contests, sponsored locally by the Richmond Battlefield Park Lions Club.
The 2012-13 theme is “Imagine Peace” and students may enter the essay contest or poster contest to express their feelings about peace. Essays must be no longer than 500 words in length, submitted in English, type-written in black ink and double spaced. Students entering the poster contest may use a variety of mediums, including charcoal, crayon, pencil or paint.}

The Innsbrook Rotary Club is gaining international acknowledgement after earning one of the foundation’s most distinguished honors, the Presidential Citation Award. The award comes at an exciting time for the club as its membership rate is stronger than ever, consisting of vibrant and accomplished business and professional leaders in the area.
Rotary Clubs started more than 100 years ago and now have 1.2 million members worldwide who volunteer in communities at home and abroad. Their goals are to convey the humanitarian spirit by supporting education and job training, providing clean water, combating hunger and improving health and sanitation, supporting the Rotary motto, a commitment to “Service Above Self.”}

The Great Big Idaho Potato Truck stopped by BJ’s Wholesale Club on Starling Drive June 15 as part of a seven-month cross-country tour marking the Idaho Potato Commission’s (IPC) 75th Anniversary and raising funds and awareness for Meals on Wheels. Among the visitors who had their photos taken in front of the "specially cultivated” potato -- which weighs six tons and stands almost 12 feet tall -- were Andre Ragsdale, age 13, and nine-year-old Nathan Ramirez.
Hauled by a 48-foot-long, specially-constructed flatbed trailer that took a year to build, the 28-foot-long potato made its national debut at the Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho in December when ESPN featured it during the game. }
National recording artist Toad the Wet Sprocket kicks-off the Summer Concert Series at Short Pump Town Center on Thursday, June 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the main plaza. Toad the Wet Sprocket was one of the most successful alternative rock bands in the early 90s. The band achieved fame with their album “Fear” (released in 1991) and the singles “All I Want” and “Walk on the Ocean” reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Summer Concert Series will continue every Thursday night until August 16. Admission is free. Town center retailers will offer giveaways and a $500 Short Pump Town Center gift card will be given away at each concert.}

More than 1,400 athletes from around the Commonwealth will go for the gold in powerlifting, swimming, track and field, softball, tennis and bowling this weekend June 8-9 during the 2012 Special Olympics Summer Games.
Summer Games competitions will be held at various locations around the region tomorrow, beginning at 9 a.m.: Softball – Glen Allen Softball Complex, 2175 Mountain Rd.; Powerlifting, track and field, wheelchair athletics, softball skills and tennis – University of Richmond; Swimming – St. Catherine’s School, 6001 Grove Ave.; and bowling – AMF Hanover Lanes, 7317 Bell Creek Rd. and Bowl America Short Pump, 4400 Pouncey Tract Rd.
New for 2012, a Young Athletes “Fun Run” will take place at 9:45 a.m. on the track at the University of Richmond. The 25M run is aimed at introducing athletes age 2-10 to Special Olympics.}

Looking for a fun, family-oriented festival to attend this weekend? Imagination Richmond might be for you. The event will be held at The Shops at Willow Lawn May 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event, now in its fourth year, began when Willow Lawn Marketing Manager Sarah North felt there was a need in the region for a family-friendly community event at which children could enjoy and explore their imagination through music, art, dance and other children activities.}
Whether you’re an oenophile, a Hokie fan or just looking for fun, the Central Virginia Wine Festival is the place to be.
The annual event will be held May 12 at the SnagAJob Pavilion at Innsbrook.
“It’s a fantastic, fun atmosphere,” said Michael Eck, founder and chairman of the event.
This year’s event will showcase 15 wineries from around the Commonwealth, feature live music, food and arts and crafts vendors. And, of course, there will be plenty of Virginia wine (and also beer).}
