Western Henrico Rotary Club Golf Tournament Raises $24,500
|
Henrico Citizen Staff Reports 11/02/10
The Western Henrico Rotary Club raised more than $24,500 for scholarships at the annual Becky Briggs Memorial Golf Tournament on Columbus Day at the Crossings Golf Course – the most it has ever raised through the event. The tournament is named after a 17-year-old senior at Mary Mount High School, who was killed in an automobile accident in 1990. Her father is a member of the Western Henrico Rotary Club.
Since it began in 1991, the tournament has provided nearly $100,000 in scholarships to approximately 60 students, according to club president Christina McClung. The remaining balance of the money raised from the tournament is held and managed by The Community Foundation. Proceeds are used to provide scholarships for graduating seniors from Hermitage, Tucker and Freeman high schools who plan to attend a four-year college or community college. Recipients are selected from those schools because the Western Henrico Rotary Club sponsors Interact Clubs at those locations. In addition, two scholarships are awarded to students attending J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College who have completed at least one year of study. Event chairman Steve Esbach said scholarship recipients will each receive $2,000 this year. The Western Henrico Rotary Club also gives $500 each year to the libraries at Crestview and Johnson elementary schools in Henrico County, where a number of Western Henrico Rotary Club members serve as volunteers in the reading programs. The deadline to apply for scholarships is March 1. For details, visit westernhenricorotary.org. |

Ironfish delights with a variety of tasty catches

I was overjoyed to head back for another meal at Ironfish by Pescados, considered the Best New Restaurant in 2011 by both the Richmond Times Dispatch and Richmond Magazine. I agree whole-heartedly with their ratings. Since I first visited the restaurant for my birthday in January, I was waiting for the perfect special occasion to return. I couldn’t wait another year, obviously.
Run by the same restaurateurs as Pescados Latin Caribbean Seafood in Midlothian and Eat in Oregon Hill, Ironfish offers the same unique dishes and top-level customer service. > Read more.
