The Varina Woman’s Club will present “Adam’s Eve” from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at John Rolfe Middle School, 6901 Messer Rd. All proceeds are used to support philanthropic endeavors in the community such as scholarships for deserving Varina High School graduates. Tickets are $15 and include dinner. The first-ever Dancing with the Richmond Stars will be held at 7 p.m. at the VCU Singleton Center. NBC12 meteorologist Andrew Freiden will emcee and a panel of local celebrity judges will select the winning pair, all for the benefit of Children’s Hospital of Richmond. The 20th annual Southern Women’s Show will take place at the Richmond Raceway Complex from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Women can shop for the latest styles in clothing, jewelry and handbags, watch a fashion show, enjoy a makeover, receive home décor tips, sample gourmet foods and more. Southside Area Mother of Multiples (SAMOM) will hold their Everything for Kids Semi-Annual Sale at Manchester Middle School, 7401 Hull Street Rd., from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Featured items include gently used infant, children’s and maternity clothing, equipment, bedding, books, toys and more. The Richmond SPCA’s 9th Annual Dog Jog and 5K Run will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Robins-Starr Humane Center, 2519 Hermitage Rd. As part of the county’s 400th anniversary, Henrico will sponsor a free Virginia Indian Cultural Program for all ages at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd., from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Indian artisans will display their pottery, beadwork, leatherwork and painting and discuss their work with the public. The Virginia Indian Intertribal Drum and Dancers will perform traditional and contemporary tribal dances and also discuss the significance of the regalia they wear and each dance they perform. One Voice Chorus will perform “Jubilee!” at 7 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 216 W. Leigh St. In honor of the sesquicentennial commemoration of the Civil War and the end of slavery, more than 100 singers in the interracial community chorus will perform African-American spirituals and other songs by African-American composers, past and present. The audience is invited to a pre-concert conversation, “Harmony in Living Black and White,” at 6 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults; children 12 and under are free. The Weinstein JCC will host a Purim Carnival from 12:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. There will be carnival games, goodie bags, live music, arts and crafts, inflatables, clowns, food and more. Author, child abuse survivor to speak at Henrico event

To help celebrate twenty years of service to advocating for abused and neglected children in Henrico County, Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. (CASA) will host an evening with bestselling author K.L. Randis on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Belmont Recreation Center in Lakeside.

Randis is best known for her bestselling novel, Spilled Milk, which tells her painful – but ultimately triumphant – personal story of abuse and of child abuse prevention. The book is her first novel.

Philippines ambassador to the US visits Filipino Festival in Henrico


The Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. attended the Ninth Annual Filipino Festival at Our Lady of Lourdes Church earlier this month. Cuisia (pictured above with festival performers) was welcomed by County Manager John Vithoulkas and Brookland District Supervisor Dick Glover (below) at the church, which is located in Lakeside.

While enjoying some of the cultural performances at the festival, the ambassador and his wife had a private lunch with Vithoulkas, Glover, Eldon Burton (an outreach representative from U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner’s Office) and Father James Begley, the pastor of OLL. > Read more.

Dragon boats invade the James

Hundreds of spectators filled the banks of the James River to watch two dozen teams of competitors in the Walgreen’s Richmond International Dragon Boat Festival at Rocketts Landing Aug. 2. The event included a number of races, as well as several cultural performances. ‘Planes’ sequel crashes

‘Fire and Rescue’ proves too predictable, boring

Planes: Fire and Rescue opens with a dedication to the hero firefighters of the world. It’s an admirable notion, and it makes sense, given that this is a film about planes that fight fires.

But here it might be a little out of place, as Planes: Fire and Rescue has a few things on its mind besides supporting the men and women who routinely throw themselves into burning buildings.

Like money. Lots and lots of money – into the 11-figures-and-counting range. In case you weren’t aware, 2006’s Cars was the biggest moneymaker Disney had in decades – not because of how much green the film printed at the box office, but because a combination of toys, games and snack foods stamped with the Cars seal of approval routinely pulls in tens of billions of dollars per year. > Read more.
