The first-ever Dancing with the Richmond Stars will be held at 7 p.m. at the VCU Singleton Center. NBC12 meteorologist Andrew Freiden will emcee and a panel of local celebrity judges will select the winning pair, all for the benefit of Children’s Hospital of Richmond. Local group the Upper East Side Big Band will perform at the Steward School, 11600 Gayton Rd., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The entire family will enjoy a concert of jazz, swing and rock, including the band’s rendition of the Beatles’ album, “Abbey Road.” Tickets are $25. The 20th annual Southern Women’s Show will take place at the Richmond Raceway Complex from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Women can shop for the latest styles in clothing, jewelry and handbags, watch a fashion show, enjoy a makeover, receive home décor tips, sample gourmet foods and more. Special guests include fitness expert Denise Austin, design expert Kathy Peterson and Johnathan Kayne of Project Runway Season 3. Southside Area Mother of Multiples (SAMOM) will hold their Everything for Kids Semi-Annual Sale at Manchester Middle School, 7401 Hull Street Rd., from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Featured items include gently used infant, children’s and maternity clothing, equipment, bedding, books, toys and more. The Richmond SPCA’s 9th Annual Dog Jog and 5K Run will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Robins-Starr Humane Center, 2519 Hermitage Rd. As part of the county’s 400th anniversary, Henrico will sponsor a free Virginia Indian Cultural Program for all ages at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd., from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Indian artisans will display their pottery, beadwork, leatherwork and painting and discuss their work with the public. The Virginia Indian Intertribal Drum and Dancers will perform traditional and contemporary tribal dances and also discuss the significance of the regalia they wear and each dance they perform. One Voice Chorus will perform “Jubilee!” at 7 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 216 W. Leigh St. In honor of the sesquicentennial commemoration of the Civil War and the end of slavery, more than 100 singers in the interracial community chorus will perform African-American spirituals and other songs by African-American composers, past and present. The audience is invited to a pre-concert conversation, “Harmony in Living Black and White,” at 6 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults; children 12 and under are free. The Weinstein JCC will host a Purim Carnival from 12:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. There will be carnival games, goodie bags, live music, arts and crafts, inflatables, clowns, food and more. Henrico CASA and Susan's Selections are partnering to present an online auction beginning Sept 12. Proceeds will benefit Henrico CASA. Any item with a $50 or more resale value – from pottery to furniture and everything in between – can be donated.
Bring goods to Susan's Selections, 4909 W Marshall St. in Richmond between Aug. 13-26. Weekday drop-off hours will be 10 a.m. until. 4 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. until 3 p.m, and Sundays 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. > Read more.
The 10th Annual Filipino Festival will be held Aug. 7-8 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 8200 Woodman Rd., beginning with opening ceremonies at 5 p.m. Friday and continuing with live entertainment, food and exhibits until 10 p.m. On Saturday the festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a full schedule of performances featuring traditional Filipino dance, music and song.
Filipino cuisine, including BBQ, pansit, lumpia, adobo, halo-halo, lechon, empanada and leche flan, will be available for purchase. The festival will also feature a children's area, church tours, exhibits, and health screenings. > Read more.
Innsbrook After Hours will welcome ZZ Top, The Beach Boys, O.A.R. and other performers this month.
On Aug. 12, Tyler Farr, with special guest Parmalee, will perform at 6 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m. Farr began his career with years of formal voice training with the OAKE National Choir but at 21, he moved to Nashville. Tickets are $15 to $99.
