The 34th annual Model Railroad Show will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 25-26 and from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 27 at the Science Museum of Virginia, 2500 W. Broad St. Watch model trains travel through miniature cities, towns and detailed landscapes and explore the science behind model railroading. Celebrate the 75th anniversary of a Richmond tradition – the Legendary Santa will come down the chimney daily starting Nov. 25 and continuing through Christmas Eve at the Children’s Museum of Richmond-Central, 2626 W. Broad St. Santa will be accompanied by the Snow Queen and his comical elf. Guests will be able to visit Santa Land, ride the Polar Train and take pictures with Santa. Times vary daily. Dominion GardenFest of Lights opens at 5 p.m. at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Ave. GardenFest is a holiday tradition that features more than a half million lights, botanical decorations, trains, holiday dinners, family activities and more. New this year are caroling on Tuesday nights, Peppermint Lane, a 250-foot tunnel of lights, whimsical fairy-house botanicals and more. GardenFest is a rain or shine event and runs nightly from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. until Jan. 9. The Garden is closed Dec. 24-25. ComedySportz is back with a brand new theatre, located in the Gold’s Gym Plaza at West Tower, 8906 W. Richmond native and comedian Micah “Bam-bamm” White will perform at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Nov. 25-26 and at 7 p.m. Nov. 27 at the Funny Bone Comedy Club and Restaurant in the Short Pump Town Center. White has performed with top comedians such as D.L. Hugely, Bob Saget, Bernie Mac, Eddie Griffin and Pablo Francisco. “The Zulu Patrol: Mission Weather,” an exhibit based on the popular PBS children’s television show, continues through Dec. 31 at the Children’s Museum of Richmond’s Short Pump location in West Broad Village. Five multicolored, interactive stations designed for children ages 3-8 present early learners with key science concepts as they explore what weather is, how it works, what affects it and how it affects us. The Virginia Historical Society’s HistoryMobile will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at VHS, 428 N. Boulevard. An interactive museum on wheels, the HistoryMobile is a 53-foot expandable tractor-trailer organized by the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission. The HistoryMobile will be parked in front of the VHS building and society staff involved with the creation will be available to answer questions. Varina Ruritans honor police, fire officials and community members

The Varina Ruritan Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a banquet Nov. 10, during which it presented several annual awards, including Policeman of the Year – to Henrico Officer Aaron M. Lancaster (top) – and Firefighter of the Year – to Julian T. Lipscomb (second from top).

The club also received a plaque from the Henrico Division of Fire (third from top) expressing the division's appreciation for the club and its support of fire prevention programs. > Read more.

The Rink to open at WBV Nov. 14

The grand opening of The Rink outdoor ice skating rink at West Broad Village will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. with skating and family activities. At 4 p.m., grand opening festivities – featuring exhibitions of ice sculpting, ice skating and cheering, as well as fire pits, costumed characters, and food vendors – will begin. Skating costs are $8 for children and $10 for adults, with $4 skate rentals available. Parking is free. The Rink is located at 3939 Duckling Drive, Glen Allen.
