The Adam Growe Quiz Show will be at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd., at 7 p.m. Comedian Adam Growe is the host of Discovery Channel Canada’s “Cash Cab.” In his stand-up comedy quiz show, the audience can participate as contestants for cash prizes live on stage. “A Holly Jolly Christmas on Lakeside Avenue,” Lakeside’s annual Christmas open house, will take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 11 and during regular business hours on Nov. 12. Shop with 24 Lakeside retailers offering home décor, clothing, antiques and vintage treasures, toys, gourmet food and more. Enjoy complimentary rides on the Holly Jolly Trolleys on Nov. 11 – the trolleys will stop at seven spots along Lakeside Avenue. Bronze Star recipient Tom Cossé and former U.S. Army JAG officer Charles Allen will speak at a Veteran’s Day program in Cannon Memorial Chapel on the University of Richmond campus at 1:30 p.m. Cossé served with the U.S. Army’s 7th Special Forces Group (airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C. and the 1st Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam from 1966-1967. He holds the Parachutist Badge and received the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Vietnam and the Presidential Unit Citation. Allen, founder and managing member of Goodman Allen & Filetti, PLLC, has been an adjunct professor of law at Richmond School of Law, Liberty University School of Law and the U.S. Army’s Judge Advocate General’s School. He was chair of the Virginia State Bar’s Committee on professionalism and is a frequent lecturer on litigation techniques. The program will also feature the university’s ROTC and an invocation by University Chaplain Craig Kocher. Law students Kate Anthony and Christopher Adams will sign the national anthem. A reception will follow in the Wilton Interfaith Center.
Theatre IV will perform “A Year with Frog and Toad” at 7 p.m. Nov. 11, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Nov. 12 and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 13 at Barksdale Theatre, 1601 Willow Lawn Dr. in the Shops at Willow Lawn. The story follows two great friends, the cheerful and popular Frog and the grumpy Toad, through four fun-filled seasons. Along the way they learn life lessons, including an important one about friendship and rejoicing in the attributes that make each of us unique. The performance is approximately two hours with an intermission and is suggested for ages four and older. The show runs through Dec. 31. Tickets are $18 to $24. Boys ages 13-17 with a male adult are invited to a Boys-to-Men Forum from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, 1440 N. Laburnum Ave. The forum will address issues such as loyalty, honesty, friendship, education, sports and the impact of their actions. Help boys transition into men with a wealth of information. Learn more about how Civil War era people showed their patriotic spirit for their country and their soldiers at “Patriotism: Civil War Style” at 1 p.m. at Dabbs House Museum, 3812 Nine Mile Rd. Laurel Hill United Methodist Church, 1919 New Market Rd., will host its Mission Fall Dinner and Auction from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The menu will be chicken, mashed potatoes, string beans, rolls, coffee and tea and a variety of homemade desserts. Singer and songwriter Josh Ritter, who recently appeared at Lewis Ginter’s “Groovin’ in the Garden” series, will perform at University of Richmond’s Modlin Center for the Arts at 7:30 p.m. Ritter’s breakout albums, 2006’s “The Animal Years” and 2007’s “The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter,” both received critical acclaim and lead to his increasing popularity and sold-out tours. The Second Sunday South of the James Concert Series at Bon Air Presbyterian Church, 9201 W. Huguenot Rd., continues at 4 p.m. Marjorie Wharton, a soprano from Philadelphia, will be joined by Russell Wilson, a pianist for the Richmond Symphony. The Varina Ruritan Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a banquet Nov. 10, during which it presented several annual awards, including Policeman of the Year – to Henrico Officer Aaron M. Lancaster (top) – and Firefighter of the Year – to Julian T. Lipscomb (second from top).
The club also received a plaque from the Henrico Division of Fire (third from top) expressing the division's appreciation for the club and its support of fire prevention programs. > Read more.
The grand opening of The Rink outdoor ice skating rink at West Broad Village will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. with skating and family activities. At 4 p.m., grand opening festivities – featuring exhibitions of ice sculpting, ice skating and cheering, as well as fire pits, costumed characters, and food vendors – will begin. Skating costs are $8 for children and $10 for adults, with $4 skate rentals available. Parking is free. The Rink is located at 3939 Duckling Drive, Glen Allen.
