Deep Run High School, 4801 Twin Hickory Rd., will present “Hairspray, The Musical” at 7 p.m. Nov. 9-10. Set in 1962 Baltimore, Md., the musical focuses on contemporary themes of inclusion and acceptance set to upbeat music with energetic dancing. Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door. Nearly three dozen Lakeside Avenue merchants will host the eighth annual Holly Jolly Christmas event Nov. 9-10. Shoppers will be able to take free trolley rides to and from shops along the avenue from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10. Participating shops will stay open late, and many will offer special deals for holiday shoppers. All participating businesses also will have special containers to collect donations for the Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad, the event's beneficiary. On Nov. 10, Nutzy, the Richmond Flying Squirrels' mascot, will appear at the Lakeside Farmers' market from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and an antique car display will be held at the site of the Lakeside Community Christmas Tree, between Hilliard Road and Dumbarton Road. The University of Richmond continues its fall International Film Series with “Elena” at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 and at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Robins School of Business, Ukrop Auditorium. “Elena” is a gripping modern twist on the classic noir thriller. New Castle Productions, featuring local actors ages 5-60, will present “Man of Honor” at 1 p.m. at Henrico Theatre, 305 E. Nine Mile Rd. “Man of Honor” tells the story of Second Lt. Henry Ossian Flipper, the first African American to graduate from West Point and become an officer in the US Army. He received this honor in 1877 and within only four years, he was falsely accused and put on trial for a crime he did not commit. Tickets are $10 to $25. Ages 11-13 are invited to a workshop on the basic techniques of archery from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Deep Run Recreation Center, 9900 Ridgefield Pkwy. Henrico Junior 4-H camp registration open

For parents looking to keep their kids outside and away from the video games this summer, the Virginia Cooperative Extension is still accepting registrations for the 2013 Henrico Junior 4-H Camp.

The camp will be held June 17-23, and is open to boys and girls ages 9-13. A total of 10 spaces for boys and 27 spaces for girls remain available, and registration is open until May 24. The cost is $230, which includes lodging, meals, programs, instructional materials and charter bus transportation. > Read more.

Mother and son open new restaurant in Sandston

A new restaurant has opened in a well-known Sandston building.

The Sandston Kitchen will celebrate its official grand opening on Memorial Day, May 27. The restaurant is located in the site of the former Sandston Pharmacy at 2 West Williamsburg Road. It serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week and dinner Tuesday through Saturday. > Read more.

Ironfish delights with a variety of tasty catches

I was overjoyed to head back for another meal at Ironfish by Pescados, considered the Best New Restaurant in 2011 by both the Richmond Times Dispatch and Richmond Magazine. I agree whole-heartedly with their ratings. Since I first visited the restaurant for my birthday in January, I was waiting for the perfect special occasion to return. I couldn’t wait another year, obviously.

Run by the same restaurateurs as Pescados Latin Caribbean Seafood in Midlothian and Eat in Oregon Hill, Ironfish offers the same unique dishes and top-level customer service. > Read more.

Veteran restaurateur set to open in Short Pump

Tran’s Pho 1 Grill will serve Vietnamese fare
After nearly a year out of the restaurant industry, a well known 30-year Henrico restaurateur is ready to open up his fifth venture in Short Pump.

Paul Tran, along with his wife Ellen will open up Pho 1 Grill, a Vietnamese restaurant, in June in the Towne Center West Shopping Center.

Tran has been serving up Vietnamese food since the mid-’80s, his first being Que Huong on Rigsby Road. He also owned Mr. Chan’s on Horsepen Road and Saigon Gourmet on Hull Street Road. > Read more.
