Mystery Dinner Playhouse’s new show “Here’s Killing You, Kid” will open at 7:30 p.m. inside the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 6531 W. The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd., will host UkeFest Virginia, a celebration of the four string dynamo, Nov. 2-3. The Festival features wall to wall music, from serious concerts to informal jams, workshops, and open mic performances, as well as artisans and vendors; all designed to present the wide range of fun available from this unique and mesmerizing instrument. The event kicks off Friday as Ashland resident Thomas Wakefield and The Aloha Boys perform at 7 p.m. UkeFest admission includes a UkeFest Unlimited Access Package for $65 (all concerts and three workshops) or individual tickets which are $12 for concerts and $10 for workshops. The Lakeside Rescue 5K, to benefit the Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad, will begin at 9 a.m. at 2007 Timberlake Ave. The LVRS provides emergency medical services to the community free of charge. Richmond Road Runners will facilitate the race and timing. There will also be music, various food venues and businesses. Registration is $20 in advance and $25 on race day. The first annual Girl Power 2 Cure 5K run, in honor of Anna Cate who is fighting Rett Syndrome, will take place at 8 a.m. in the Snagajob Pavilion in Innsbrook, 4901 Lakebrook Dr. Rett Syndrome is a neurological disorder diagnosed almost exclusively in young girls. The second annual Family Arts Day Celebration at the University of Richmond will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This art-centered family event will feature free arts-centered activities including the exhibitions in the Harnett Museum of Art, hands-on art activities in the Booth Lobby and Modlin Courtyard, entertainment, refreshments and more. Raiders help ‘Stir It Up!’

Henrico Junior 4-H camp registration open

For parents looking to keep their kids outside and away from the video games this summer, the Virginia Cooperative Extension is still accepting registrations for the 2013 Henrico Junior 4-H Camp.

The camp will be held June 17-23, and is open to boys and girls ages 9-13. A total of 10 spaces for boys and 27 spaces for girls remain available, and registration is open until May 24. The cost is $230, which includes lodging, meals, programs, instructional materials and charter bus transportation. > Read more.

Veteran restaurateur set to open in Short Pump

Tran’s Pho 1 Grill will serve Vietnamese fare
After nearly a year out of the restaurant industry, a well known 30-year Henrico restaurateur is ready to open up his fifth venture in Short Pump.

Paul Tran, along with his wife Ellen will open up Pho 1 Grill, a Vietnamese restaurant, in June in the Towne Center West Shopping Center.

Tran has been serving up Vietnamese food since the mid-’80s, his first being Que Huong on Rigsby Road. He also owned Mr. Chan’s on Horsepen Road and Saigon Gourmet on Hull Street Road. > Read more.

The Wine Loft opened in West Broad Village in January 2010, offering a full bar with wine, beer, spirits and a kitchen with tapas-style snacks. It offers a seasonal patio area along Whittall Way. Its walk-in wine “humidor” in plain view from the bar offers more than 85 wines by the glass ($6-$65) and about 250 by the bottle ($28 and up), with some emphasis on Italian wines.
