Highland Springs United Methodist Church, 22 N. Holly Ave., will host a spaghetti dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The menu includes homemade spaghetti, salad, homemade desserts and drinks. Adults are $7 and children are $3.50. Dinner is available for eat-in or take-out. For details, call 737-1503.

The Latin Ballet of Virginia will present a weekend of Hispanic heritage Oct. 21-23 at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd. El Dia de los Muertos Festival, a family-focused event, will be held Oct. 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The “Day of the Dead” is a celebration of one of the most traditional Mexican festivities and embraces the cycle of life. There will be music, arts and crafts, food, vendors, dancing, art exhibits and more. Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes. Admission is free. The Latin Ballet of Virginia will also perform “MACONDO” at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 21-22 and at 3 p.m. on Oct. 23. “MACONDO” is a performing arts interpretation based on the novel “Cien Anos de Soledad” (One Hundred Years of Solitude) written by Hispanic Literature Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The 1st Annual Richmond Children’s Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum Ave. There will be hands-on activities for children of all ages, a market place full of unique gift ideas, a pumpkin patch, live music, local vendors, a food court and picnic area and more. Richmond’s Heart Walk, a fundraiser for life-saving cardiovascular research and community education programs in Central Virginia, will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Snagajob.com Pavilion in Innsbrook. Henrico County Division of Police will join forces with Mooers Volvo of Richmond and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to present Traffic Safety Day on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mooers Volvo, 7211 W. Broad St. Henrico Police will conduct driver safety demonstrations, child safety seat inspections and senior driver safety classes throughout the day, as well as distribute teen driver safety information. In addition, Mooers Volvo will offer free vehicle safety checks, car washes and safe braking demonstrations. The event will also feature information from MADD about teen driving, including the dangers of texting while driving and the effects of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Henrico Police will also demonstrate to teens and adults the effects of DUI using fatal vision goggles. Other offerings include free food, prizes, a moon bounce and face and pumpkin painting. CARE, Cat Adoption Rescue Efforts, Inc., a local nonprofit dedicated to the rescue of homeless cats, kittens and other animals, will host a large yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lakeside Professional Office Park, located at the corner of Lakeside Avenue and Hermitage Road. Henrico Junior 4-H camp registration open

For parents looking to keep their kids outside and away from the video games this summer, the Virginia Cooperative Extension is still accepting registrations for the 2013 Henrico Junior 4-H Camp.

The camp will be held June 17-23, and is open to boys and girls ages 9-13. A total of 10 spaces for boys and 27 spaces for girls remain available, and registration is open until May 24. The cost is $230, which includes lodging, meals, programs, instructional materials and charter bus transportation. > Read more.

Veteran restaurateur set to open in Short Pump

Tran’s Pho 1 Grill will serve Vietnamese fare
After nearly a year out of the restaurant industry, a well known 30-year Henrico restaurateur is ready to open up his fifth venture in Short Pump.

Paul Tran, along with his wife Ellen will open up Pho 1 Grill, a Vietnamese restaurant, in June in the Towne Center West Shopping Center.

Tran has been serving up Vietnamese food since the mid-’80s, his first being Que Huong on Rigsby Road. He also owned Mr. Chan’s on Horsepen Road and Saigon Gourmet on Hull Street Road. > Read more.

Popular Short Pump spot offers upscale comfort, flavors
The Wine Loft opened in West Broad Village in January 2010, offering a full bar with wine, beer, spirits and a kitchen with tapas-style snacks. It offers a seasonal patio area along Whittall Way. Its walk-in wine “humidor” in plain view from the bar offers more than 85 wines by the glass ($6-$65) and about 250 by the bottle ($28 and up), with some emphasis on Italian wines.
