The 4th Annual Richmond Folk Festival will be held along downtown Richmond’s historic riverfront from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 14, 12 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 15 and from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 16. The festival celebrates the roots, richness and variety of American culture through music, dance, traditional crafts, storytelling and food. There will be more than 25 performing groups on seven stages. The festival also features a children’s area with activities, games, a petting zoo and live music. Admission is free. Henrico Recreation and Parks will host the grand opening and dedication ceremony of the county’s first off-leash dog park from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Dorey Park, 2999 Darbytown Rd. The park is approximately one acre in size and has a five-foot enclosed fence with two areas – one for small dogs and one for larger dogs – that features a double gated entry with mulch and a sod play surface. Dogs will enjoy new exercise play equipment, a doggie water fountain and spray features. Dogs of all shapes, sizes and pedigrees are welcome. Hours are from dusk till dawn. The first 200 dogs at the grand opening will receive a fun giveaway. There will also be photo opportunities with Snoopy and Sparky the Fire Dog. For details, visit http://www.henricorecandparks.com .
Henrico County’s annual Harvest Festival will be held from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Meadow Farm, 3400 Mountain Rd. There will be hands-on activities and demonstrations depicting typical homemaking and farming tasks of the era such as cider making, candle dipping, bee keeping, cornhusking and shelling, blacksmithing, woodworking and more. Other highlights include pony rides, a petting zoo, tethered hot air balloon rides, the Great Pumpkin Patch of Meadow Farm (ages 3-12), gourd decorating and performances by A Good Natured Riot and the Barbara Martin Band. The Reality Rescue II Festival will be held from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Sharky’s Courtyard, 4032-A Cox Rd. Over 100 reality stars from shows like Survivor, American Idol, Big Brother, The Mole, The Amazing Race, The Bachelorette, Expedition Impossible and more will be in attendance. Proceeds will benefit Southern Comfort Animal Rescue, an all-breed dog rescue group from Wheeler County, Ga., that suffered a devastating fire in April. Tickets are $50. The 30th annual Midlothian Village Day Festival and Craft Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Midlothian Middle School, 13501 Midlothian Tnpk. Highlights of the festival include a parade sponsored by the Midlothian Foundation, craft fair, games, inflatables, food, entertainment, community booths, a raffle and silent auction. All proceeds will benefit the Midlothian Junior Women’s Club projects, such as Cinderella Dreams and local charities such as Richmond Friends of the Homeless, ASK, Freedom House, Feed More and others. Canadian group Vishtén will perform at 7 p.m. at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd. The concert is part of CACGA’s 5th Center Season. The group of multi-instrumentalists and step-dancers incorporate the fiddle, guitar, accordion, penny-whistle, mandolin, piano, jaw-harp and bodhran into their performance. Tickets are $25. Comfort Zone Camp’s 10th Annual Fall Bash will be held from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Innsbrook Snagajob.com Pavilion. There will be live music featuring the Right On Band, dancing, oyster shucking, BBQ, beer and wine. For ages 21 and up. Tickets are $70 in advance and $80 at the door. All proceeds will benefit Comfort Zone Camp, a bereavement camp for children and teens who have experienced the loss of a parent or sibling. For details, visit http://www.comfortzonecamp.org .
Horses In Service (HIS) will hold its annual Open House and Community Awareness Day from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Natural Therapeutic Riding Center, 6301 Hines Rd. All activities are included for $5 – hand paint a horse, crafts, bead making, balloons, face and hair painting, festival games and a moon walk. The Varina Ruritan Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a banquet Nov. 10, during which it presented several annual awards, including Policeman of the Year – to Henrico Officer Aaron M. Lancaster (top) – and Firefighter of the Year – to Julian T. Lipscomb (second from top).
The club also received a plaque from the Henrico Division of Fire (third from top) expressing the division's appreciation for the club and its support of fire prevention programs. > Read more.
The grand opening of The Rink outdoor ice skating rink at West Broad Village will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. with skating and family activities. At 4 p.m., grand opening festivities – featuring exhibitions of ice sculpting, ice skating and cheering, as well as fire pits, costumed characters, and food vendors – will begin. Skating costs are $8 for children and $10 for adults, with $4 skate rentals available. Parking is free. The Rink is located at 3939 Duckling Drive, Glen Allen.
