Henrico Humane Society’s 5th Annual Bark in the Park will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Deep Run Park, 9900 Ridgefield Pkwy. A 5K run will start at 9 a.m. and a 2K dog walk will start at 10:30 a.m. The registration fee for each is $25 and all proceeds benefit the Henrico Humane Society. Additional activities include music by acoustic group OminOtagO, a performance by Jonathan Austin, pet-related vendors, dog contests and adoptions, a petting zoo, moon walk and more. Celebrate Hispanic culture at the 9th Annual ¿Qué Pasa? Festival of Virginia from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Science Museum of Virginia, 2500 W. Broad St. Hosted by the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the festival will feature live music and dancing, an international food festival, Hispanic artists and traditional artisans, educational games, the “Passport to Education” Pavilion and more. The Modlin Center for the Arts and the University of Richmond Museums will host a Family Arts Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be activity tables, art projects and food, as well as two performances by Justin Roberts and the Not So Ready for Naptime Players at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Camp Concert Hall. The Junior League of Richmond’s 6th Annual Touch a Truck event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum Ave. This unique, interactive event allows children to see, touch and explore their favorite big trucks and vehicles as well as to meet the personnel who protect, serve and build the Richmond community. Vehicles on display routinely include construction trucks, emergency responders, tractor trailers, utility trucks and helicopters. The event also features area mascots, special performances, snack bars, face painting, inflatables, games, crafts and vendors. The Richmond area American Diabetes Association will host its annual 5K “Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes” at 10 a.m. at Monument Avenue and St. Mary’s Hospital. This family- and pet-friendly event will feature a Wellness Village, Kid’s Zone and entertainment. Walkers who raise at least $25 will receive a complimentary lunch. Henrico High School, 302 Azalea Ave., will host the Warrior 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Tenth grade IB student Jack Montgomery has organized the event over the course of five months and gathered nearly 20 volunteers as part of his personal project. The Gallmeyer Farms’ Fall Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 1-2 at The Pumpkin Patch. There will be children’s activities, hay rides, farm animals, vendors, artisans, contests and pumpkin picking. C&F Bank and Lite98 will host the Short Pump Mile and Express Fun Run, Richmond’s largest timed youth road race, at 7:45 a.m. behind Short Pump Town Center near American Family Fitness. All participants will receive a race t-shirt, a medal and refreshments. Awards will be given to age group and overall winners. The School Participation Competition will award the top five schools with the most participants a total of $2,000 to be used for their physical education programs. Varina Ruritans honor police, fire officials and community members

The Varina Ruritan Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a banquet Nov. 10, during which it presented several annual awards, including Policeman of the Year – to Henrico Officer Aaron M. Lancaster (top) – and Firefighter of the Year – to Julian T. Lipscomb (second from top).

The club also received a plaque from the Henrico Division of Fire (third from top) expressing the division's appreciation for the club and its support of fire prevention programs. > Read more.

The Rink to open at WBV Nov. 14

The grand opening of The Rink outdoor ice skating rink at West Broad Village will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. with skating and family activities. At 4 p.m., grand opening festivities – featuring exhibitions of ice sculpting, ice skating and cheering, as well as fire pits, costumed characters, and food vendors – will begin.
