The Friday Night Fun Club for ages 50+ will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Hidden Creek Recreation Center, 2417 Brockway Ln. Socialize with friends while playing card and board games. The Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond will present Jessica Lang Dance at 7:30 p.m. in the Alice Jepson Theatre. Lang is a graduate of the prestigious Juilliard School and has created more than 75 works for ballet companies such as Joffrey Ballet, Richmond Ballet, Kansas City Ballet and Ailey II. The Junior League of Richmond will hold its 7th annual Touch a Truck from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Richmond International Raceway. Touch a Truck offers children a hands-on opportunity to explore their favorite trucks and professional vehicles and to meet the people who build, protect and serve the community. Featured vehicles include police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, bulldozers, dump trucks and tractor trailers. There will also be snack bars, bounce houses, games, crafts, vendors and more. Join St. Mary’s Hospital in celebrating the soon-to-open Bon Secours Pediatric Emergency Department from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 5801 Bremo Rd. The Glen Allen Ruritan Club, in association with the County of Henrico Division of Recreation and Parks, will host Glen Allen Day from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park, 2880 Mountain Rd. The festivities will kick-off with a parade beginning at the intersection of John Cussons Road and Mountain Road and continuing to Meadow Farm. Children’s activities will include Miss Sheri the Clown, arts and crafts, vendors, a custom and classic car show and live entertainment. Rain date is Sept. 22. Internationally recognized artist and Virginia resident P. (Pat) Buckley Moss will speak during a luncheon at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. Moss has been able to overcome a life-long learning disability and achieve incredible success as a renowned artist. The luncheon will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $50. Following the luncheon, Moss will be signing books and prints in the Gumenick Family Gallery from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the signing event is free. Henricus Historical Park will celebrate Publick Days, an annual event which commemorates the establishment of the second successful English settlement in the “New World,” from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Sept. 15-16. Activities include living history reenactments, weapon demonstrations and skirmishes, craftsmen and blacksmiths, medical demonstrations, children’s activities and crafts, storytelling and more. The Philip Glass Festival at the University of Richmond will open with the film “Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts” at 3 p.m. in the Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music. To celebrate the 70th birthday of Philip Glass, filmmaker Scott Hicks began an 18-month journey filming Glass as he toured across three continents. The Varina Ruritan Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a banquet Nov. 10, during which it presented several annual awards, including Policeman of the Year – to Henrico Officer Aaron M. Lancaster (top) – and Firefighter of the Year – to Julian T. Lipscomb (second from top).
The club also received a plaque from the Henrico Division of Fire (third from top) expressing the division's appreciation for the club and its support of fire prevention programs. > Read more.
The grand opening of The Rink outdoor ice skating rink at West Broad Village will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. with skating and family activities. At 4 p.m., grand opening festivities – featuring exhibitions of ice sculpting, ice skating and cheering, as well as fire pits, costumed characters, and food vendors – will begin. Skating costs are $8 for children and $10 for adults, with $4 skate rentals available. Parking is free. The Rink is located at 3939 Duckling Drive, Glen Allen.
