The Chesterfield County Fair opens today and continues through Sept. 1 at 10300 Courthouse Rd. There will be midway rides, a carousel, vendors and exhibitors, the Miss Chesterfield pageant, contests, festival fare and more. Hours of operation are 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday. Daily gate admission is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for children ages 6-12 and free for children under five. Wristbands for unlimited midway rides are $25. West End Comedy will present an all-ages show at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24 and a mature show at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at HATTheatre, 1124 Westbriar Dr. Shows feature an improv format similar to Whose Line is it Anyway and audience suggestions. The ninth annual Movin and Groovin event for pancreatic cancer research will take place from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Dorey Park, 2999 Darbytown Rd. The event features a 5K run, two-mile walk and kids’ fun run. Entertainment will be provided by DJ Luke Gibson, along with live music by Haze and the Transients, juggling by Jonathan Austin, PT Moonwalks and balloon fun with Miss Sheri the Clown. All ages are invited to the Summer Splash Down at 2 p.m. at North Park Library, 8508 Franconia Rd. The Kings of Swing, a versatile dance and show band, will perform at 6 p.m. at Henrico Theatre, 305 E. Nine Mile Rd. Virginia Home for Boys and Girls and Endorphin Fitness will host the VHBG Youth Triathlon from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 8716 W. Broad St. Boys and girls, ages 5-14, can run, bike and swim as individual racers or join a relay team. Beginners are welcome. There is also an optional five-day camp to prepare youth for a triathlon where they will receive expert coaching and experience fitness in an engaging, fun group setting. The event benefits VHBG. To help celebrate twenty years of service to advocating for abused and neglected children in Henrico County, Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. (CASA) will host an evening with bestselling author K.L. Randis on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Belmont Recreation Center in Lakeside.
Randis is best known for her bestselling novel, Spilled Milk, which tells her painful – but ultimately triumphant – personal story of abuse and of child abuse prevention. The book is her first novel.
The Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. attended the Ninth Annual Filipino Festival at Our Lady of Lourdes Church earlier this month. Cuisia (pictured above with festival performers) was welcomed by County Manager John Vithoulkas and Brookland District Supervisor Dick Glover (below) at the church, which is located in Lakeside.
While enjoying some of the cultural performances at the festival, the ambassador and his wife had a private lunch with Vithoulkas, Glover, Eldon Burton (an outreach representative from U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner’s Office) and Father James Begley, the pastor of OLL. > Read more.
