The Henrico Theatre Company will present the musical comedy “The Cocoanuts” at 8 p.m. July 27-28 and at 2:30 p.m. July 28-29 at the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd. Henrico native Brad Sharp will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Henrico Theatre, 305 E. Nine Mile Rd. Sharp grew up in Highland Springs and has experience on Broadway, TV and film and events such as the Emmys and the Oscars. St. Mary’s for Kids’ Movies on the Avenues continues with “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” at 8:30 p.m. The free outdoor movie will be shown at the Westhampton School’s playing fields, 5800 Patterson Ave. at Maple Avenue. The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will host Feria de la Oportunidad from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum Ave. Targeted to Richmond’s Latino communities but open to all, “Feria” offers employment opportunities, including the Henrico Police, networking and community resources, such as health information, nonprofit resources and state resources like the DMV. There will also be prize raffles, music, food and workshops and seminars throughout the day on various topics in Spanish such as health, business, education, family services and emergency awareness. DEON Intervention, Inc., a nonprofit organization designed to empower communities and young adults ages 10-22 in the areas of Drugs, Education, Obesity and Nutrition, will hold its first “Move with DEON” 3K at Dorey Park, 2999 Darbytown Rd., from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. There will be giveaways, vendors, food, children’s activities and more. In honor of National Dance Day, Saxon Shoes will hold a free dance class at 10 a.m. In addition to promoting dance education and physical fitness, Saxon's Dance Day event is designed to spread the word about one of Saxon's on-going community partners, the Central Virginia Chapter of the National MS Society. The Henrico County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension will host a free workshop on common food allergies from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the extension office of the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Dr. The session will provide an overview of the eight major food allergens and explain how to read food labels and identify hidden allergens. Participants also will learn how to treat an allergic reaction with an EpiPen auto-injector and receive tips on managing food allergies at home, in schools and in child care centers. The K95 Countryfest 2012, featuring country star Darius Rucker, will perform at 2 p.m. at the Snagajob Pavilion in Innsbrook, 4901 Lakebrook Rd. Colt Ford and Corey Smith also headline. For the second year, K95 will invite members of the US Army to CountryFest; new soldiers will be sworn in on stage. The Richmond West Breakfast Lions Club (based in western Henrico) recently donated 59 backpacks to the Westover Hills Elementary School on Jahnke Road.

Glen Allen student to perform at Carnegie Hall

Thanks to a first-place win in The American Protege International Vocal Competition 2014, Glen Allen High School student Matija Tomas will travel to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall in December.

At the first-place winners recital in Weill Hall, Matija will perform Giacomo Puccini’s opera aria, “Chi il bel sogna di doretta.” She will perform with other vocalists from around the world and have the opportunity to win other awards and scholarships.

Locally, Thomas has performed with Richmond’s renowned Glorious Christmas Nights, Christian Youth Theatre, and WEAG’s Urban Gospel Youth Choir. > Read more.

Gayton Baptist Church dedicates new outreach center


The John Rolfe YMCA and Gayton Baptist Church have partnered in an effort to bring greater health and wellness opportunities to the community.

Through this partnership, the John Rolfe Y will run Youth Winter Sports programs, including basketball and indoor soccer, in Gayton’s newly renovated $5.5 million outreach center that features a new gymnasium, youth and teen space, social space with café, meeting space and full service commercial kitchen. > Read more.

Deep Run HS plans fall musical

Tickets for Deep Run High School’s fall musical production – Aida – will go on sale Nov. 3. The Elton John-Tim Rice pop opera, inspired by Verdi’s classic opera, tells the story of enslaved Nubian princess Aida, who falls for captain of the guard Radames, who is betrothed to the Egyptian princess.

CAT Theatre to host auditions

CAT Theatre will hold auditions for Book of Days on Sunday, Oct. 26 and Monday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. each day. Auditions will be held at CAT Theatre, 319 North Wilkinson Road in Henrico. Book of Days will run Jan. 23-Feb. 7 and is one of CAT’s submissions to the Acts of Faith Festival.

Book of Days, by Pulitzer Prize winner Lanford Wilson is an exploration of faith, justice, and corruption, amidst the backdrop of murder – and community theatre – in small town America. Book of Days was first written for and produced by Jeff Daniels Purple Rose Theatre Company of Michigan.

Director Leslie Cline is seeking five females between the ages of 20-65 and seven males between the ages of 24-65. > Read more.
