Henrico native Brad Sharp will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Henrico Theatre, 305 E. Nine Mile Rd. Sharp grew up in Highland Springs and has experience on Broadway, TV and film and events such as the Emmys and the Oscars. St. Mary’s for Kids’ Movies on the Avenues continues with “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” at 8:30 p.m. The free outdoor movie will be shown at the Westhampton School’s playing fields, 5800 Patterson Ave. at Maple Avenue. The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will host Feria de la Oportunidad from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum Ave. Targeted to Richmond’s Latino communities but open to all, “Feria” offers employment opportunities, including the Henrico Police, networking and community resources, such as health information, nonprofit resources and state resources like the DMV. There will also be prize raffles, music, food and workshops and seminars throughout the day on various topics in Spanish such as health, business, education, family services and emergency awareness. DEON Intervention, Inc., a nonprofit organization designed to empower communities and young adults ages 10-22 in the areas of Drugs, Education, Obesity and Nutrition, will hold its first “Move with DEON” 3K at Dorey Park, 2999 Darbytown Rd., from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. There will be giveaways, vendors, food, children’s activities and more. In honor of National Dance Day, Saxon Shoes will hold a free dance class at 10 a.m. In addition to promoting dance education and physical fitness, Saxon's Dance Day event is designed to spread the word about one of Saxon's on-going community partners, the Central Virginia Chapter of the National MS Society. The Henrico County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension will host a free workshop on common food allergies from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the extension office of the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Dr. The session will provide an overview of the eight major food allergens and explain how to read food labels and identify hidden allergens. Participants also will learn how to treat an allergic reaction with an EpiPen auto-injector and receive tips on managing food allergies at home, in schools and in child care centers. The K95 Countryfest 2012, featuring country star Darius Rucker, will perform at 2 p.m. at the Snagajob Pavilion in Innsbrook, 4901 Lakebrook Rd. Colt Ford and Corey Smith also headline. For the second year, K95 will invite members of the US Army to CountryFest; new soldiers will be sworn in on stage. More cyclists on the way

Riders to pass through county on East Coast Greenway tour
From October 4-9, 35 cyclists will be riding through Henrico County as part of a 325-mile tour of the East Coast Greenway (ECG) route from Fredericksburg, Virginia, to Raleigh, NC.

A 2,900-mile trail route that extends from the Canadian border at Calais, Maine, to Key West, Florida, The East Coast Greenway is heading into its 25th year. The Week A Year (WAY) Tour is an annual ride and fundraiser that has been working its way south since the first WAY Tour launched from Calais, Maine in 2011. Riders cover a different section of the Greenway each year and are on target to complete the route in Key West in 2019. > Read more.

Henrico woman wins $1M in Va. Lottery game

When Amanda Spiller of Henrico saw that she’d won the $1 million prize in the Virginia Lottery’s $100 Million Cash Extravaganza game, it didn’t immediately sink in.

“I was in shock. . . complete shock,” she said. “I had to double and triple check.”

She bought the winning ticket at the 7-Eleven at 2750 Hungary Spring Road in Henrico. She had the choice of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $681,000 before taxes. She chose the cash option. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket. > Read more.
